answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/09/2020 answer text <p>We are aware of the statement made by the Nigerian House of Representatives in July 2018 on killings in Plateau State.</p><p>The UK Government condemns all incidents of intercommunal violence in Nigeria. We have made clear to the Nigerian authorities at the highest levels the importance of protecting civilians, including ethnic and religious minorities, and human rights for all.</p><p>The UK Government's assessment remains that religion is not the principal driver of most incidents of intercommunal violence in Nigeria. The underlying drivers of conflict are complex, and include competition over land, water and resources, as well as rapid population growth. We hosted a joint conference on 'Fostering Social Cohesion in Nigeria' in February. Attendees included representatives from civil society, faith and political leaders, representatives from the Nigerian Government and UK parliamentarians. The discussion focused on the complex causes of conflict and explored solutions: a full report from the conference has been published: <a href="https://www.wiltonpark.org.uk/event/wp1752/" target="_blank">https://www.wiltonpark.org.uk/event/wp1752/ </a></p><p>It is UK Government policy not to unilaterally determine whether genocide has occurred, in line with the Genocide Convention. The Foreign Secretary chaired a review process across government looking at all strands of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget, evaluating the impacts of spend and making sure the UK can maintain operational capacity. We are aware of reports of forced sterilisation of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, which would amount to a gross violation of human rights. We are closely monitoring all available evidence, and have raised the issue with Chinese officials. Anti-Semitism, violence and hate have no place in society. We repeatedly raise our concerns with the highest levels of the PA. The Foreign Secretary did so with the Palestinian Prime Minister and Minister for Education on his most recent visit. We welcome the PA's work to revise its textbooks and their intention to publish updated content for the start of the school year in September 2020.</p><p>Following UK calls for action, our European Partners commissioned the Georg Eckert Institute to conduct an independent review of Palestinian textbooks, which is currently underway. We have regular discussions with our European Partners on the review and continue to encourage them to finalise the report as soon as possible. We recognise the serious human rights issues that older persons often face in many parts of the world. The UK engages in the annual sessions of the UN Open Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEGWA), supports resolutions on the rights of older persons at the UN Human Rights Council and at the UN General Assembly, and engages constructively in the debate in other fora. We are supportive, in principle, of a multilateral instrument dedicated to the rights of older persons and welcome OEGWA's work to help deepen our understanding of these important issues, before we consider what might be the most appropriate solution. The UK remains alarmed at the deteriorating human rights situation in Venezuela. Venezuela has a duty to uphold high standards of human rights, the more so as a member of the Human Rights Council, and to cooperate with the Council and its mechanisms. The UK will continue to support the work of the UN Human Rights Council's Independent International Fact-Finding Mission in Venezuela, and is committed to supporting a broad human rights agenda in the country. On 31 August, the Maduro regime announced that it had pardoned 110 political prisoners, including Ruben Gonzalez who has been held since November 2018.
