answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/03/2022 answer text <p>Decarbonising UK industry is a core part of the Government’s ambitious plan for the green industrial revolution. The Net Zero Strategy, published in October 2021, reaffirms our commitment to work in collaboration with the Steel Council to consider the implications of the recommendation of the Climate Change Committee to ‘set targets for ore-based steelmaking to reach near-zero emissions by 2035’. Hydrogen-based steelmaking is one of the technological approaches being examined as part of this process.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is monitoring international progress on low carbon steel making trials, using hydrogen and other technologies, and is actively engaged in international initiatives to support industrial decarbonisation innovation, including the Mission Innovation Platform and the Leadership Group for Industry Transition.</p><p> </p><p>The UK steel sector has the opportunity to bid into industrial fuel switching innovation programmes under the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP), which is intended to promote switching away from more carbon-intensive fuel sources.</p><p> </p><p>The Government will continue to work together with sector through the Steel Council on the shared endeavour of a low carbon future.</p> answering member constituency Chelsea and Fulham answering member printed Greg Hands question first answered 22/03/2022 14:48:12 answering member 1526 label Biography information for Greg Hands

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/11/2021 answer text <p>We are working closely with the UK Steel Council to explore decarbonisation pathways – including electric arc, industrial carbon capture equipment attached to existing blast furnaces, or other emerging technologies, such as hydrogen. The ideal decarbonisation pathway for individual sites is based on multiple factors and the Government is working closely with companies to support them as they make commercial decisions on the optimum route.</p><p> </p><p>We have set up the Industrial Decarbonisation and Hydrogen Revenue Support (IDHRS) scheme to fund our new hydrogen and industrial carbon capture business models. We will be providing up to £140 million of taxpayer funds will be made available to establish the scheme, including up to £100 million to award contracts of up to 250MW of electrolytic hydrogen production capacity in 2023 with further allocation in 2024.
