answer text
The Department for International Development’s communications demonstrate how UK aid reduces extreme poverty, tackles global challenges and is in Britain’s national interest.

We raise awareness of our work and its results in a number of different ways.

A recent example is the Supporting Syria and the Region conference in February. Through extensive work with the media and partners, we helped the public at home and abroad to understand why the conference was needed, how the money raised will make a difference, and how they can get involved. The public had more than 222m opportunities to see or hear about the conference; media coverage of the conference was extensive and overwhelmingly positive. We are continuing to communicate the longer-term impact of the conference and explain why supporting people in the region is in the UK’s interest.

Another example is our recent work to mark International Women’s Day. This positioned the UK as a world leader on securing rights for girls and women. Ministers attended eight public events to mark the day and spoke about DFID’s work on girls and women. The public had 252m opportunities to see or hear about our activity through the media, and a further 1.5m people were reached through digital activity.

DFID has a strong following online and provides regular updates about its work and achievements through: Twitter (www.twitter.com/dfid_uk), Facebook (www.facebook.com/ukdfid) and Dev Tracker (devtracker.dfid.gov.uk).

We have so far helped more than 1.3 million Yemenis who have been affected by the conflict with food assistance, medical supplies, water, and emergency shelter, as well as supporting refugees and migrants in Yemen. We work through International Non-Governmental Organisations and United Nations agencies to deliver this assistance, ensuring the response is targeted towards the most vulnerable.

This funding includes support to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to provide over 750,000 Internally Displaced People and people affected by the conflict with access to a safe water supply and critical hygiene items. The UK has also provided funds to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF and Save the Children to raise awareness of child rights, to monitor and support displaced children and to provide children with food, nutritional support, water and sanitation.

answer text
DFID’s Agricultural Policy Framework, published last year, sets out the approach and steps DFID will take to support agriculture. Depending on context and need, this is expected to include support to small scale organic, or smallholder, farmers in Africa. Our priorities include helping smallholder farmers to increase their productivity, and to better link them to markets to sell their produce so as to increase their incomes, improve their livelihoods and contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction.

For example we are providing support to the International Fund Agriculture Development’s Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Programme. This will help smallholder farmers in Africa cope with the impacts of climate change by providing extension services to farmers, improving irrigation and infrastructure, and helping farmers to increase their harvests through improved seeds and better soil and land management practices.
more like this

answer text
Much of our assistance is already laying the groundwork for future reconciliation, stabilisation and reconstruction efforts inside Syria. Regarding the economy, we are already taking a long term approach to foster market stability and economic recovery. This includes the supply of agricultural inputs to farmers to increase production as well as support to small businesses. This has potential to be scaled up once a political transition is reached and depending on the nature of that settlement.

On 26 November 2015, the Prime Minister announced that the UK will commit at least £1 billion to Syria’s reconstruction. We anticipate that reconstruction funds would be allocated against a plan agreed between a new, inclusive Syrian government and the international community. We expect that, over time, this funding will include support for re-building Syria’s shattered economy and infrastructure.

However, we must not underestimate the scale of the challenge of post-conflict reconstruction. Syria has experienced 40 years under an oppressive regime and a brutal civil war. Conflict has reversed Syria into poverty. Consequently, reconstruction will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. That is why we will use our influence as a major shareholder to push the UN and International Financial Institutions and the private sector to bring their planning, resources and expertise to bear.
