This activity includes survey, mine clearance and the provision of mine risk education to the local population. This forms part of the £100 million spent across DFID’s Global Mine Action Programme, which overall tackles the threat of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) in developing countries. The worst affected provinces are Kandahar, Helmand, Herat and Farah. More than 40 people are known to have died, and hundreds of others have been injured or are missing. According to the Government, more than 7,100 houses have been damaged and over 5,600 destroyed across Afghanistan. More than 50,000 people require humanitarian assistance.</p><p> </p><p>At present, the Afghan Government are leading efforts to respond. International organisations are helping them to assess the situation on the ground and respond directly with food, non-food items, hygiene kits, winter clothes and emergency shelter (tents). DFID is closely monitoring what is happening and we stand ready to assist as and when our support is requested or required.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is at the forefront of the international humanitarian response in Afghanistan. As a result of UK funding, up to two million Afghans received lifesaving assistance in 2018, including hundreds of thousands of Afghans affected by one of the worst droughts the country has ever faced. For example, recent reports show that some 62% of girls are missing school every month and 5% drop out completely due to menstruation. The Government of Zimbabwe has sought to address this through suspending import duty and value added tax on sanitaryware. Through our programmes in Zimbabwe we are currently supporting over 12,000 girls to stay in secondary school by providing a package of essential items including sanitaryware. Since the launch of the Youth Agenda in 2016 we have: introduced youth panels across several of our country offices, launched an organisation-wide network of young people, supported a further 15,430 young people from all backgrounds to complete the International Citizen Service programme, supported youth-led research projects, and given youth voices a platform at a number of international summits including the Family Planning Summit in July 2017, the Disability Summit in July 2018 and the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in April 2018. We continue to champion young people in our overseas programming. For example, we are currently working with over 735,000 adolescent girls to support their transition into secondary school.</p><p>Between 2015 and 2018 DFID supported 11.4 million children in primary and lower secondary education, of whom 5.6 million were girls. For example, the next phase of the International Citizen Service (ICS) will have a renewed focus on diversity, employability and skills to not only give young people the confidence to engage in global issues, but also the skills to thrive as they transition into adulthood and the employment market. We are also working to enhance safeguarding practices for young people in tertiary education. Another example of our continued efforts is our leadership on tackling youth unemployment, with a particular focus on Africa. In addition, DFID is proud to sit on the Global Board of Generation Unlimited. This UNICEF-led multi-stakeholder initiative was launched in September 2018 with a focus on educating, upskilling, and empowering young people. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/03/2019 answer text <p>The UK government is deeply concerned about the findings of the IMPACT-se report into the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) new curriculum and it remains a priority for the Department for International Development (DFID) to commission an independent review of the PA’s textbooks. Our timeline for the textbook review remains unchanged. We expect to be able to announce our partners in the review and the start of work on this project shortly. We cannot yet provide further information owing to ongoing commercial discussions, but we will inform interested parliamentarians as soon as possible. The Palestinian Ministry of Finance and Planning has not published details of the planned reductions in wages announced last month. DFID officials will engage with the PA to assess the implications for PEGASE beneficiaries. We know that all forms of violence against women and girls are exacerbated by conflict and crises. I am appalled by the persisting high levels of violence and agree we need to do more collectively to end it. The UK is proud to be a global leader in efforts to eradicate violence against women and girls, including intimate partner violence, sexual violence, FGM, and child marriage. We support the objectives of the Oslo conference to secure increased political commitment to action and would like to see a greater focus on accountability to affected populations. We recognise the role sport can play in development, including social integration and inclusion, health and well-being and improving learning outcomes. As part of DFID’s due diligence process we assess all risks including reputational risk before funding a charity.</p><p> </p><p>Last year we matched all donations to Soccer Aid pound-for-pound, up to the value of £5 million. The money raised was spent on UNICEF’s work to help vulnerable children in Swaziland and Lesotho.
