answer text
The UK has continually been very clear in its messaging about the importance of Sudan respecting democratic norms and permitting open political space. DFID will provide support for the democratic process through our governance and economic reform programme, which has been specifically designed to respond to opportunities as they arise in Sudan. This could take the form of providing support to a range of civilian and civil society organisations to support their participation in the transition process. We also engage with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Global Britain Fund, which has provided support to democracy in Sudan through projects seeking to reinforce democratic scrutiny of government decisions at the National Assembly, and some support to policy making for opposition political parties.
more like this

answer text
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the largest in the country’s history and the second largest on record. The UK has adopted a ‘no regrets’ approach to help bring it to an end as quickly as possible, minimising loss of life and impact on communities. We are one of the leading supporters of the response, providing funding and technical expertise to the WHO and others to break the transmission chain (through treatment centres, contact tracing, vaccination, safe and dignified burials, and other such means). Given the significant risk that Ebola may spread into neighbouring countries, we are also the leading donor for regional preparedness.

With case numbers continuing to increase, it is important to maintain focus on the Strategic Response Plan and working effectively with local communities, particularly in areas of active conflict. The UK continues to actively influence the UN, other donors and countries in the region to ensure an appropriate level of preparedness and response.

answer text
The UK has a multi-year commitment to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and we plan to continue to fund the Agency in line with that agreement. This will provide basic services such as health and education to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank and the region. Both the UK and UNRWA recognise the need for UNRWA to reform to ensure its sustainability, and UNRWA has undertaken significant cost-cutting measures to respond to budget cuts and growing need. We welcome UNRWA’s efforts to broaden its donor base and are encouraging partners to step up with more funding and more predictable disbursements. A long term solution requires a just, fair, agreed and realistic settlement for Palestinian refugees. Until that happens the UK remains firmly committed to supporting UNRWA and Palestinian refugees.
more like this

answer text
Despite commitments made in the peace agreement signed on 12 September, physical and bureaucratic impediments continue to obstruct the delivery of lifesaving humanitarian aid in South Sudan.

All parties continue to obstruct aid delivery, including the Government of South Sudan, which the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates was responsible for nearly half (44%) of all incidents in October this year.

The continued obstruction of aid, whether physical or bureaucratic, is completely unacceptable and acts of violence against those delivering lifesaving assistance are barbaric. Alongside our international partners and the UN, Ministers and senior officials are engaging with South Sudan’s leaders at the highest level to emphasise that the immediate removal of all obstructions, physical and bureaucratic, must be a priority. The UK Special Representative also raises our concerns regularly as part of his engagement with the region. We continue to urge all parties to abide by the commitments they have made to ensure full, safe, unhindered humanitarian access throughout South Sudan.
