answer text
We welcome the mechanism agreed by Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the UN to facilitate the import of construction materials. This is an important first step. Reconstruction will require a durable ceasefire, an agreed approach on security, predictable and sustained access for people and goods into and out of Gaza, and good governance arrangements. Only then will donors have the assurances they need to be able to support the reconstruction effort.

more like this

answer text

The UK remains extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in eastern Sudan. The needs assessment carried out to inform the 2014 UN response showed that health and nutrition indicators were above emergency thresholds in many locations and access to services was extremely poor. A UK funded UNICEF national nutrition survey revealed large numbers of children were suffering from acute malnutrition especially in Kassala and Red Sea State. These findings have been incorporated into the recently revised Humanitarian Strategic Response Plan for 2014 which is used for determining where donor resources are allocated.

The UN’s Common Humanitarian Fund (CHF) plays an important role in funding the humanitarian response in Sudan using the Strategic Response Plan as a guide. In 2014 the UK contributed £17m to the CHF. We are also investing in longer term programmes to build the resilience of communities and improve access to water and sanitation in eastern Sudan.

answer text

The Department for International Development is reducing expenditure on gas through various measures including the installation of a green roof and biomass boiler at our office in Scotland; we have also improved the external fabric of the building reducing heat loss. We have reduced electricity use through reducing the number of IT servers, printers and by upgrading all laptops and PCs to models which use at least 50% less electricity. A reduction in plant operation times and wider temperature control at both UK sites has resulted in significant savings in both gas and electricity. In London we have recently moved to a new smaller office which will save 25% in energy usage; we also incorporated energy saving mechanisms as part of the refurbishment.

more like this

The UK is taking a leading role in working with the countries affected and with the international community to ensure that the outbreak is contained and help reaches those in need. In total, over £25 million of British funding is supporting the global effort to contain this disease. This includes £5 million of new direct funding to help partners working on the ground like the WHO, Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières‎ to treat victims and prevent the spread of Ebola. Over £20 million of UK support is helping contain Ebola through commitments to multilateral institutions (the World Bank and the African Development Bank) and the EU.

more like this
