The Department has not made any assessment of the impact of prohibiting the use of the term probiotic.</p><p>The Department’s view is that the term probiotic would be considered a health claim. A health claim is any claim that states, suggests, or implies that health benefits can result from consuming a given food. Regulations governing the use of nutrition and health claims on foods require health claims to be authorised before they can be used on food or in a commercial context. The authorisation process involves scientific assessment of substantiating evidence. These regulations are in place to protect consumers from being misled by ensuring any health claims made are backed by robust scientific evidence.</p><p>The term probiotic would only be permitted as a health claim if a health claim is authorised for a specific strain of live bacteria. There are currently no such authorised health claims. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 16/09/2024 answer text <p>The Government and the devolved administrations recommend that women who could become pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, should take a daily supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid before conception and up until the 12th week of pregnancy. This is in addition to any folic acid consumed through their diet.</p><p>In England, Start for Life provides information and support to pregnant women and expectant parents on the importance of taking folic acid on their website, and through an email programme. Public health messaging by health departments across the United Kingdom raises awareness of the importance of folic acid supplementation by women who may become pregnant, and for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The Government keeps the need for educational campaigns under review.</p><p>The Government monitors folate intake and status through the<em> National Diet and Nutrition Survey</em> (NDNS). The latest publication reported that 89% of women of childbearing age had increased risk of neural tube defects. It is the responsibility of integrated care boards (ICBs) to make available appropriate provision to meet the health and care needs of their local population, including autism assessment and support services, in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines.</p><p>On 5 April 2023, NHS England published a national framework and operational guidance to deliver improved outcomes in all-age autism assessment pathways. This guidance will help ICBs and the National Health Service to deliver improved outcomes for children, young people, and adults referred to an autism assessment service.
