answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 25/04/2019 answer text <p><del class="ministerial">I</del> <ins class="ministerial">Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon </ins>spoke to the Secretary General of the Commonwealth about the situation in Brunei on 4 April. The Secretary General is in contact with the Government of Brunei and is working through Commonwealth channels.</p><p>​The UK encourages all Commonwealth partners to protect and promote the values in the Commonwealth Charter, including its opposition to all forms of discrimination. We have made clear that nobody should face persecution or discrimination because of who they are or whom they love.</p><p>Brunei is one of several Commonwealth countries that imposes corporal and capital punishments. It has now introduced new potential penalties under the Sharia Penal Code.</p><p>We have raised our concerns with the Government of Brunei. Through our Embassy in Baghdad and Consulate-General in Erbil, alongside UN officials and our other international partners, we consistently urge the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government to ensure the safe, voluntary and unhindered return of all Internally Displaced Persons, including minorities, supported by the prospect of genuine community reconciliation. We recognise that security is one of the main concerns facing not just minorities but many other displaced Iraqis wanting to return home. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Boris Johnson)'s launching of the global campaign Bringing Daesh to Justice. As a first step in this campaign, we are working with the government of Iraq to bring a proposal before the UN on evidence gathering and preservation in Iraq. It is vital that this is done now, before evidence is lost or destroyed.
