answer text
As the Foreign Secretary said in his statement on 10 December to commemorate International Human Rights Day, "promoting, championing and defending human rights is integral to the work of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and part of the everyday work of all British diplomats". As I outlined in a Westminster Hall debate on 20th December to mark International Human Rights Day, the steps taken by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to promote and support human rights overseas are extensive and varied. Evidence of the FCO's activity to promote human rights can be seen in the FCO's Annual Human Rights Reports (the most recent of which was published and laid before the House in July 2017). This includes details of steps the FCO has taken to promote and support human rights in the FCO's thirty Human Rights Priority Countries.
more like this

answer text
The United Kingdom is a strong and long-standing advocate of universal human rights based on our values and our respect for international law and the rules-based international system. Through our strong international diplomatic presence we are influential members of the main institutions in which human rights issues are handled, as is evidenced by our recent re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Our diplomatic network works to defend human rights globally. We dedicate significant programme funds to support human rights projects, including through our Magna Carta Fund for Human Rights and Democracy. This strong global engagement on human rights will be unchanged by the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
more like this

answer text
From 2016, we will term the countries in the FCO’s Annual Human Rights Report “Human Rights Priority Countries” rather than “Countries of Concern”. This change is a better reflection of the new criteria underpinning our country reporting, which were amended following feedback from external stakeholders, including the House of Commons' Foreign Affairs Select Committee. The term “Human Rights Priority Countries” is a better indication of the FCO’s proactive and practical engagement on human rights in the priority countries that we work in.
more like this
