answer text <p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency’s (DVSA) database records every vehicle that has an MOT, and the dates the MOTs were carried out. Authorities, such as the Police, have access to that data should they need to check if a vehicle has a valid MOT. There is no comparable database for vehicles which do not have a valid MOT.</p><p> </p><p>As such, it is not possible to determine the number, or proportion, of vehicles being used illegally without an MOT in England or the constituency of Easington.</p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>MOT testers are required to check if exhausts comply with the Construction and Use regulations that prohibit alterations which create excessive noise. Testers are generally capable of identifying these instances without a decibel meter, and those that are not can be identified by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The MOT is an important safeguard, but excessive motor vehicle noise is also a result of nuisance driver behaviour that is regulated by local authorities.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>For all vehicles that require an MOT, the MOT status is checked when motorists renew their Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). An MOT must be in place prior to VED being renewed.</p><p> </p><p>The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) provides the ‘MOT reminder service’ (<a href="https://www.gov.uk/mot-reminder" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/mot-reminder</a>). Motorists can use the service to sign up to get free reminders, by text message or email, when their vehicle’s MOT is due.</p><p> </p><p>Motorists can also use the ‘MOT history service’ (<a href="http://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history" target="_blank">www.gov.uk/check-mot-history</a>), for all categories of vehicle, to check if the vehicle has a current MOT, when the next MOT is due, and see any defects or advisories listed against the vehicle.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Department ran a consultation between 18 January and 22 March on the proposal to defer the date of a light vehicle’s first MOT from three to four years. The results of the consultation are currently being considered by ministers and a response will be issued in due course.</p><p> </p><p>The impact assessment and its annex include a full consideration of the potential decrease in road safety due to more time and mileage passing before a vehicle’s first MOT under a one-year increase to the first date. The analysis found that the level of casualties involved in collisions caused by vehicle defects could increase by 1 - 4%, but this represents a much smaller magnitude when compared to overall collisions (around 0.01 - 0.05%). The published impact assessment also outlines assumptions and limitations of the analysis.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The maximum MOT fees were last reviewed in 2010 with the most recent increases in the maximum fee in April 2010. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency incurred costs totalling £32,438,000 in the financial year 2020/21 to administer MOT testing. 40,490,000 MOT tests were done in 2020/21 so the cost per test was 80 pence.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The percentage of vehicles declared unroadworthy following an MOT conducted statistics are published at Vehicle testing and enforcement activity effectiveness reports - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is not possible to determine the number of MOT testing centres that have ‘closed’ since March 2020 as sites might cease testing and then resume testing at a later date either by the site owner or a new owner.
