Since launching in September 2022, FCDO's Mass Atrocity Prevention Hub has been working with international and NGO partners to incorporate best practice, build capacity, and embed atrocity prevention in FCDO. The Hub is producing guidance on the range of diplomatic, development, economic and security interventions to help prevent atrocities, strengthening FCDO's atrocity prevention training offer, and integrating atrocity risk analysis into global horizon scanning and early warning capabilities. The Hub is working to ensure that an atrocity prevention lens is applied across FCDO's work where relevant.
more like this

answer text
We remain in close contact with our international partners, including the US, regarding the situation in Sudan. We note the recent sanctions by the US on Abdelrahim Dagalo and Abul Rahman. In July, the Minister for Development and Africa announced a package of six sanctions, freezing the assets of commercial entities linked to both SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) and RSF (Rapid Support Forces). We call on our international partners to join us in taking action to target the warring parties' access to funding and arms. Our measures are aimed at pressing the parties driving the conflict to engage in a sustained and meaningful peace process, stop blocking life-saving humanitarian aid into Sudan, and end the violence and atrocities. We will take further steps, as necessary, to end the violence across Sudan, secure humanitarian access and ensure the protection of civilians.
more like this

answer text
There is a UN Arms Embargo and Sanctions Regime on Darfur, which we renewed in March 2023. There is also a longstanding bilateral UK arms embargo in place from the existing EU arms embargo on the whole of Sudan from 1994, operating under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act (2018). These regimes have been used to constrain the flow of weapons into the country and support efforts to stop those who pose a threat to stability in Darfur. The UN Arms Embargo and Sanctions Regime on Darfur will be reviewed by September 2024.

In response to the ongoing conflict and deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, on 12 July, the Minister for Development and Africa announced a package of six sanctions under the UK's Sudan (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 and a further five as part of a wider package against Wagner activities in Africa. We do not speculate on future sanctions designations as to do so could reduce their effectiveness.
more like this

answer text
The UK is working with regional and international partners to end the hostilities in Sudan. We continue to push for urgently needed humanitarian access, particularly in Khartoum and Darfur, and to secure a viable peace process. This includes support for the emergence of an all-inclusive civilian and political platform. We support the African Union's role in pushing for a resolution of the conflict in Sudan, including the establishment of an 'Expanded Mechanism' aimed at coordinating the process. It is essential that Sudan's civilians, civil society, women, youth, and Resistance Committees, are all represented in negotiations about their country's future. This is a message that we have highlighted with our Sudanese and international partners. We will continue to stress the need for the people of Sudan, rather than its soldiers, to play the leading role in their country's future, including at any upcoming meetings of the AU-convened 'Core Group' of which the UK is a member.
more like this
