answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/12/2018 answer text <p>We have serious concerns about the human rights situation in Xinjiang and the Chinese Government’s deepening crackdown; including credible reports of re-education camps and widespread surveillance and restrictions targeted at ethnic minorities.</p><p>During China’s Universal Periodic Review at the UN Human Rights Council on 6 November, the UK made a statement which described our concern about the treatment of ethnic minorities in China, including Uyghurs. We issued a specific recommendation, calling on China to implement the recommendations by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Xinjiang, and to allow the UN to monitor the implementation. We also raised our concerns about Xinjiang in our Item 4 statement at the September UN Human Rights Council, and we supported the statement of 26 October by the European External Action Service highlighting concerns about Xinjiang.</p><p>I raised our concerns about Xinjiang with Vice Minister Guo Yezhou during my visit to China on 22 July 2018. The ongoing conflict adds to the challenges around this. There have been signs of progress: October's parliamentary elections, the first Afghan-led and secured election since 2001, saw over four million Afghans vote. We are now working with partners to encourage Afghanistan's Election Management bodies learn lessons from these elections ahead of the presidential poll in 2019.</p><p>The UK believes that a political solution to the conflict between the Taliban and the Afghan government is the only way to achieve lasting stability in Afghanistan. Additional Government investment has helped World Service undergo the biggest expansion in 70 years.</p><p>In 2016, the Foreign Secretary agreed to fund new language and additional enhanced services. The World Service's 'World 2020' programme brings high quality and impartial news to an even larger global audience, by reaching some of the most remote places in the world. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/11/2018 answer text <p>The UK is fully committed to the promotion and protection of human rights, and reports of human rights abuses in the Philippines remain troubling. We are concerned by the high death toll associated with the 'war on drugs', the situation of land rights and human rights defenders, developments on media freedom, and moves to reintroduce the death penalty.</p><p>Our Embassy in Manila has made these concerns clear with senior officials and government figures and it is in regular contact with human rights groups and relevant UN bodies on a range of human rights issues. We also work closely with the wider international community, including our EU partners, to press for investigations into instances of abuse and to encourage the protection of human rights defenders.</p><p>I raised these issues with a number of Philippine Ministers during my trip to Manila in August 2018 and with the Philippine Ambassador in April 2018. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/11/2018 answer text <p>​We continue to raise the importance of countering discrimination within the Commonwealth, including on grounds of gender identity or sexual orientation. In her speech to the Commonwealth Forums on 17 April, my Rt Hon Friend the Prime Minister set out the UK's readiness to support any member state wanting to reform outdated legislation that makes discrimination on the grounds of gender identity or sexual orientation possible. The Prime Minister was clear that while we must respect one another's cultures and traditions, we must do so in a manner consistent with our common value of equality, a value that is clearly stated in the Commonwealth Charter. We have since announced a £5.6m programme working with civil society organisations to support those countries who might wish to reform discriminatory legislation. The FCO has called on all parties to ensure that the constitution is respected and due political and legal process upheld. I have urged the President on 29 October, in consultation with the Speaker, to reconvene parliament immediately to give the democratically elected representatives of the Sri Lankan people their voice.</p><p>The UK is committed to the full implementation of UN Human Rights Council Resolution 34/1, under which Sri Lanka committed to implement a range of measures to provide for human rights, truth-seeking and reconciliation following the end of its civil war. I encouraged Foreign Minister Marapana, officials and others to continue to make progress on these commitments when I visited Colombo in October 2018. Foreign and Commonwealth Office officials in India have been in touch with the Indian Government and Kerala State Government, and continue to closely follow events in the region. Consular officials helped 77 British Nationals in difficulty. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/05/2018 answer text <p>The Foreign Secretary raised his concerns about the treatment of the Rohingya of Rakhine State when he met State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on 11 February. He pressed her Government to take action in Rakhine to ensure Rohingya refugees would feel safe to return, and to investigate allegations of human rights violations. The Minister for Asia and the Pacific reiterated these messages in his meeting with the Burmese Ambassador on 6 March.</p><p>Following his visit to Kachin State in January 2018, the British Ambassador raised with the Burmese Defence Minister our concerns about renewed fighting and military restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian relief to ethnic Kachin communities. We discussed the strong bilateral cooperation between our countries, including on trade and investment. I also raised my concerns over human rights in the Philippines and the high death toll associated with the “war on illegal drugs”, stressing the need for prompt, thorough and impartial investigations into killings. We also discussed the situation in Mindanao and broader security and terrorism concerns.
