answer text
In 2022 the UK increased import duties by an additional 35 percentage points on a variety of precious and semiprecious stones and metals from Russia and Belarus, including rough and polished diamonds and sanctioned the Russian state-owned company Alrosa. Our recent announcement goes further and we will legislate later this year for a complete ban on the import of Russian diamonds. We will continue to work closely with our G7 partners to restrict trade in and use of Russian diamonds and engage with key partners with the aim of ensuring effective implementation of future coordinated restrictive measures.
more like this

On 18 April, I [Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon] made clear the UK's view that the recent wave of arrests, including of Rached Ghannouchi and restrictions on political opposition in Tunisia were eroding the space for plurality. I reiterated this message during my meeting with the Tunisian Foreign Minister on 4 May. The UK continues to urge the Tunisian Government to respect the principles and values of an open and democratic society at every available opportunity.
more like this

At the same time, the UK Government is clear that there is no military solution to the conflict in Nagorno Karabakh; we welcome the recent participation of Armenia and Azerbaijan in negotiations to work towards settling all outstanding matters between them, and urge them to build on this momentum.
more like this

answer text
The UK is worried about the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, where violence is widespread, human rights violations are increasing and humanitarian needs are growing, especially following Cyclone Mocha. In response, the UK has worked closely with the US, Canada and the EU to target sanctions on the military leadership, its access to revenue, arms and military equipment. On 21 December 2022, the UN Security Council passed the first ever resolution on the situation in Myanmar. This was led by the UK. The resolution demands an end to violence and urges immediate action by the military regime to fully implement the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Five Point Consensus and release all those arbitrarily detained.
more like this

answer text
We note Russia's Foreign Policy Concept, which identifies sovereignty, the legal foundations of the international system, and global stability as core to Russia's global priorities. Russia's unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine, in clear disregard for the UN Charter, is entirely contrary to each of these principles. In reality, Putin's war has left Russia isolated on the international stage. If these are truly Russia's priorities, it should withdraw its forces from Ukraine immediately.
more like this

answer text
We recognise that the Covid pandemic, war in Ukraine and energy crisis have shocked supply chains, meaning raw material costs for manufacturers of electric vehicles have spiked since we signed the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). This is a problem for manufacturers across Europe, not just in the UK. Ministers have raised this with the European Commission and we're ready to work with the EU and industry to find a joint UK-EU solution.

The UK Government is supporting industry through the Automotive Transformation Fund and Advanced Propulsion Centre to develop a high-value end-to-end electrified automotive supply chain in the UK and support cutting-edge automotive technologies. In the coming months, the Government will build on these interventions with decisive action to ensure future investment in zero emission vehicle manufacturing.
more like this

answer text
We are monitoring the proposals announced on 2 May by the Chief Executive of Hong Kong regarding District Council elections as they are put to Legislative Council. Changes to electoral rules in Hong Kong since 2021 have eroded the ability of Hong Kongers to be represented legitimately at all levels of government. We have made clear with our G7 partners our grave concern over the erosion of democratic elements in Hong Kong's electoral system. We will continue to bring together our international partners, to stand up for the people of Hong Kong, to call out violations of their rights and freedoms, and to hold China to the international obligations it freely agreed to.
more like this

In 2022, we set up a multi-million pound CSSF Civil Society Fund to support Ukrainian civil society organisations, including on deinstitutionalisation reform to ensure all children have a right to a family. The Ukraine Recovery Conference will focus on the role of the private sector, together with governments and civil society, in supporting recovery and reconstruction over the longer term.
more like this
