answer text
The UK is committed to working with international partners at the UN to raise our serious concerns about Human Rights in China. We have played a leading role at the Human Rights Council, and in the UN Third Committee to register the breadth and depth of international concern. On 30 June, the UK read out a formal statement on behalf of 28 countries at the 44th session of the UN Human Rights Council highlighting arbitrary detention, widespread surveillance and restrictions, particularly those targeting Uyghurs and other minorities, and urging China to allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights meaningful access to Xinjiang. On 29 October 2019 the UK read out a statement on Xinjiang on behalf of 23 countries at the UN Third Committee in New York. We will continue to seek opportunities in relevant UN fora to maximise pressure on China to comply with international human rights norms.
more like this

answer text
The Safe Schools Declaration (Declaration) is a powerful initiative that has successfully shifted mind-sets globally on the impact of attacks and military occupation of educational infrastructure. The UK welcomes the Declaration and other efforts aimed at promoting and protecting the right to education and facilitating its continuation in conflict.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), the UK is using its membership to engage with key states as they come onto the UNSC on the Declaration, to lobby for endorsement, push for effective implementation, and offer official level consultations where relevant. Through the UNSC Children and Armed Conflict Working Group, the UK supplements and supports the work of the UN to end all violations against children, including pushing states to ensure that educational facilities and related personnel are protected, in line with the Declaration. The UK lobbied successfully for key commitments in September's UNSC Presidential Statement on protecting education against attack, including securing reference to the Declaration and the critical role it plays, despite strong opposition.

In September 2020, the UK actively supported the implementation of the first International Day to Protect Education from Attack on 9 September. We participated in a related UNSC Open Debate, calling upon Member States to endorse and commit to avoiding military use of educational facilities. We will continue to call upon all UN Member States to endorse and implement the Declaration, including Israel, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

answer text
In response to the Beirut Port explosion on 4 August 2020, the UK announced a £25 million package of humanitarian assistance to help support Lebanon in its time of urgent need. This makes us one of the biggest international donors to the crisis.

Of this assistance, £20 million is allocated to the UN World Food Programme in Lebanon and will go directly to help vulnerable families by covering their essential survival needs, and will provide support for cash, vouchers, or in-kind support. £3 million will go to the British Red Cross for emergency support to respond to the explosion.

We rapidly deployed UK experts to Beirut to advise and assist with the response and undertake longer term planning. This has included:

Specialist medics from the UK's Emergency Medical Team to assess health needs on the ground;

Humanitarian, logistics and military experts supporting the rapid assessment of damaged critical infrastructure, working with other humanitarian partners to scope needs;

Specialist teams and equipment on HMS Enterprise to assess the damage to the port - which is a lifeline for Lebanon and for aid transported to neighbouring countries including Syria.
