In response, the UK has worked closely with the US, Canada and the EU to target sanctions on the military leadership, its access to revenue, arms and military equipment. On 21 December 2022, the UN Security Council passed the first ever resolution on the situation in Myanmar. This was led by the UK. The resolution demands an end to violence and urges immediate action by the military regime to fully implement the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Five Point Consensus and release all those arbitrarily detained.
more like this

answer text
The UK continues to condemn the military coup in Myanmar and the violence against the people of Myanmar. Since 1st February 2021, the UK has been at the forefront of the international response. We will continue to use all possible measures to target those who seek to facilitate and profit from the military's human rights violations. On 31st January, we announced our fourteenth tranche of targeted sanctions, to target companies and individuals who are responsible for supplying aviation fuel to the Myanmar Air Force. On 21 December 2022, the UN Security Council passed the first ever resolution, which was led by the UK, on the situation in Myanmar. led by the UK. The resolution highlighted the oppression faced by people across Myanmar, and demanded an end to violence and the release of all those arbitrarily detained. To end the culture of impunity in Myanmar, we have established the Myanmar Witness programme, which collects and preserves evidence of human rights violations for future prosecution.

answer text
Since the coup, we have worked quickly with partners to impose targeted sanctions against those who fund and arm the military, including military-linked businesses and procurement bodies in the Ministry of Defence. Most recently, on 16 June 2022, we announced our eleventh round of designations, targeting Russian and Myanmar arms dealers. We have also suspended trade promotion, strengthened advice to businesses and undertaken a rigorous review of our aid programme to ensure that no funds go to the military regime. We continue to encourage other countries to take similar measures.

The UK is a longstanding supporter of an arms embargo on Myanmar. We are clear that countries should not sell arms to the Myanmar military. On 27 March, the UK coordinated a joint statement with 48 signatories that committed us to working to prevent the flow of arms and equipment to the Myanmar military. We have also worked with partners to secure strong language on stopping the flow of arms at the G7, UN General Assembly and the UN Human Rights Council.

answer text
The UK is working closely with international partners to keep a spotlight on escalating violence and serious human rights violations by the Myanmar Armed Forces. The Joint Statement on 26 November is a clear example of this close collaboration. The Australian Government does not provide operational support to the Myanmar military, and has been consistent in its calls for all countries to cease the transfer of arms to the military regime. We worked closely with Australia to secure the UN General Assembly Resolution on the situation in Myanmar on 18 June, which called on all UN Member States to prevent the flow of arms to Myanmar. We are working closely with Australia to put pressure on those who sell arms to the military regime.
more like this

answer text
The UK is deeply concerned with the worsening situation in Myanmar. We continue to call publicly for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. In response to escalating violence in Chin and Sagaing, the UK convened the UN Security Council on 8 November. During that meeting we called on the military to exercise restraint and ensure the protection of civilians. On 15 October, the British Embassy in Yangon released a statement urging the military to end their campaign of violence and flagging our concern for communities, their livelihoods, property and places of worship.

The UK has played a leading international role in coordinating targeted sanctions against the military regime. Since the coup, we have announced seven tranches of sanctions, which have targeted the junta's ruling body and its military leadership, as well as its key commercial interests. In addition, the UK's trade review has suspended trade promotion in Myanmar and strengthened advice to British businesses on avoiding exposure to the military. The UK is considering further targeted actions against the regime.

answer text
The UK is a longstanding supporter of an arms embargo on Myanmar. We are clear that countries should not sell arms to the Myanmar military. The UK helped secure and strengthen a comprehensive EU arms embargo on Myanmar following the 2017 Rohingya crisis. Since we left the EU, we have transitioned this into domestic law. We are working closely with partners to coordinate pressure on those who sell arms to the military, and have used our leadership role at the G7 and UN to this end. On 5 May, the UK secured a G7 Foreign and Development Ministers' Meeting Communiqué that committed G7 members to continue to prevent the supply of arms and technical assistance to the military. The G7 Leaders' Communiqué of 13 June reaffirmed G7 unity on pursuing additional measures should they prove necessary.
