We remain concerned about the disparities with the polling conducted by the National Episcopal Conference of the Congo (CENCO).</p><p>At the UN Security Council on 11 January, we called on CENCO and CENI to give further detail of their results data and analysis. We join the President of the AU Commission's call for all parties to preserve peace and urge restraint, and for all sides to respect the electoral process. It is crucial that the democratic will of the Congolese people is respected. No bilateral UK aid goes directly to the DRC Government.</p><p>The long-term policy implications of the DRC elections will be reviewed once the electoral process has completed. They reported that the provisional results announced by the electoral commission (CENI) were not in line with the data collected by their observation mission.</p><p>As the Foreign Secretary said on 10 January, we are very concerned about disparities in the presidential and parliamentary election results. At the UN Security Council on 11 January, we called on CENCO and CENI to give further detail of their results data and analysis. It is crucial that the democratic will of the Congolese people is respected. We join the President of the Africa Union Commission’s call for all parties to preserve peace and urge restraint. We continue to call for all sides to respect the electoral process. The UK believes that peaceful and credible democratic processes are vital to creating a prosperous Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).</p><p>​The leader of the opposition in DRC, Martin Fayulu, has contested the results and filed an appeal in the constitutional court. As the Foreign Secretary said in a tweet on 14 January, due process must be respected on this legal challenge. The Minister for Africa, Harriett Baldwin, met with Foreign Minister She Okitundu in September and encouraged the DRC Government to ensure elections go ahead. The Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, also met with Okitundu last month and highlighted the importance of allowing international election observers, in order to build transparency and trust in the electoral process. Since 2015, the UK has spent £6.8 million on increasing accountability and transparency around the elections. We have provided funding for national observation through the Justice and Peace Committee. The UK has funded a Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) report into the Electronic Voting Machines and the WFD provided a list of recommendations to CENI.
