The British Government funds a range of interventions to help Nigeria to tackle modern slavery and human trafficking, as well as to support victims. We continue to work with the Nigerian authorities and other donors and partners to address these issues, by helping to stabilise post-conflict areas and helping the Nigerian authorities to identify criminals involved in facilitating illegal migration and modern slavery.

Our efforts are focused in the locations from where the highest numbers of migrants come.
more like this

Our statement of 9 April, made with our partners Norway and the United States, made this clear in the strongest terms. In addition, I made clear to the Sudanese Foreign Minister on 13 March that the use of force against protestors was unacceptable and must end.

more like this

answer text
We are very concerned about the violence that took place in Yumbi territory, western Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in December 2018. A recent report from the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) in the DRC suggests as many as 890 people were killed; thousands more were displaced. We echo the comments made by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet: we condemn all such violence and the perpetrators of these terrible crimes must be brought to justice as soon as possible. Our Embassy in the DRC has raised our concerns with government authorities in the region and with local UN representatives.
more like this

answer text
I spoke to Sudanese Foreign Minister Dirdiri on 23 January and 13 March to express the strength of our ongoing concern at the use of violence, the decision to declare a state of emergency and to urge the government to respect the rights of the Sudanese people. In addition, I raised our concern regarding the response to protests in Sudan, including the use of lethal force, with the Sudanese Foreign Minister and emphasised the importance of respect for the rule of law and for human rights. Most recently the Sudanese ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Office on 7 March to register the depth of our ongoing concern at recent declarations which further erode human rights. We remain deeply concern at the human rights implication of the Government of Sudan's response to protests. We continue to monitor the situation and consider the best means to support human rights improvements in Sudan, including through official engagement, public messaging, and international fora.
more like this

The UK does not have an Embassy in Burkina Faso but we are providing approximately £4.5m in humanitarian assistance to ICRC, World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF to provide basic assistance to people affected by conflict and food insecurity. We are also tackling the regional drivers of instability which impact on Burkina Faso, including encouraging faster progress in the Mali peace process, and supporting France's Operation Barkhane, the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA, and the G5 Sahel Joint Force.
more like this

answer text
The British Government, along with our international partners, believes that the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result of the Nigerian presidential election. The result declared by the Nigerian election commission is consistent with the result obtained through the civil society parallel vote tabulation. As the British Government statement of 27 February notes, independent Nigerian voices have expressed concerns about the conduct of the electoral process, including logistics and results collation, and reports of intimidation of election officials. We encourage the Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible.
more like this

We reiterate our previous calls on the Government of Mali and the Plateforme and Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) to redouble their efforts and take the additional steps needed for the immediate and full implementation of the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement. answer text
I would like to echo the Prime Minister’s comments to the House on Wednesday 16 January in offering my deepest condolences to President Kenyatta, the people of Kenya and all those affected by this terrible attack. We frequently review our assessment of the safety and security of British nationals, and did so directly after the terrorist attack in Nairobi on Tuesday. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office uses Travel Advice to help British nationals understand the risks within a country. No country is free from the risk of terrorism. As we state in our Travel Advice, terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Kenya. This was our advice before the attack and remains unchanged. We have a well established relationship with the Kenyan Government on Counter Terrorism and we will continue to work closely with them to tackle the threat from terrorism in the region.
more like this
