answer text <p>Through the UK Government’s International Climate Fund DFID has worked with the World Health Organisation to assess the effect that climate change will have on water and sanitation facilities and has produced a joint report titled ‘Vision 2030’. This outlines the evidence, and sets out what can be done to optimise the resilience of water and sanitation technologies, infrastructure and services. DFID has also funded the Overseas Development Institute to produce a report assessing the risks that climate change poses to the delivery of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programmes. All of DFID’s WASH programmes require sustainability and climate risks to be taken into account in design and delivery.</p> more like this

The DFID-funded national special needs survey has collected comprehensive data on the educational needs of children with disabilities for the first time in Kenya; all new DFID infrastructure provide disabled access; and visually and hearing impaired children will soon be supported with learning materials.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Working through the Pan American Health Organisation and the International Federation of the Red Cross, DFID has been able to provide medical supplies and health care response workers and support efforts to re-establish safe drinking water provision, proper hygiene and sanitation in communities affected by Tropical Storm Erika. This immediate assistance also included the deployment of Royal Fleet Auxiliary Lyme Bay which provided significant humanitarian support to the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica including the provision of 7,170 hot meals, 78,000 litres of water (bottled and containerised), 20 tonnes of dry provisions and treatment of 35 patients ashore. The ship’s company also removed an estimated 600 tonnes of earth in clearing homes and roads, clearing and restoring a number of key public buildings and the clearing and opening of the bridge in Dublanque.</p> more like this

answer text <p>DFID is committed to supporting Climate Smart Development which tackles climate change and reduces poverty in developing countries. Our programmes aim to increase the ability of poor people to cope with the impacts of climate-related shocks, including droughts, floods and storms, and to build their resilience to future changes in climate. The International Climate Fund (ICF) is the UK Government’s vehicle for delivering climate finance assistance and other forms of support, such as technical assistance. answer text <p>Every DFID programme which is contributing to the New Alliance initiative, including both country-level food security and nutrition programmes and funding for wider agricultural policy reforms, is subject to DFID’s annual review processes. In addition, partner governments conduct annual reviews of the effects of the New Alliance at country level. DFID has continued to provide support to WASH as part of our unprecedented £427m response to the crisis. In July this year, the Secretary of State approved a new £240m package to support the government of Sierra Leone in their plans to recover from the outbreak, as well as an additional £6m for the Government of Liberia. Programming, which is now underway, is likely to continue to include significant support for the WASH sector.</p>

answer text <p>The table below shows the UK contributions to the World Bank (specifically to IBRD, the non-concessional lending arm of the World Bank) in paid in capital and callable capital in each of the last five years.</p><p> </p><p>Please note that the UK did not pay in additional capital to IBRD or contribute additional callable capital in 2010. Additional contributions to multilateral development bank’s capital are infrequent and only happen through General or Selective Capital Increases (known as GCIs and SCIs). answer text <p>We are seriously concerned about the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Burundi.</p><p> </p><p>To support the international response and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Burundi Regional Refugee Response Plan, DFID has provided £9.25million to support relief efforts for Burundian refugees fleeing to Tanzania and £3.9million to support Burundian refugees in Rwanda. This funding will be deployed to provide life-saving activities (water and sanitation infrastructure, shelter, health and food rations).</p><p> </p><p>We have deployed human resources to improve the quality of the response (a secondment to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to work with the country team in Burundi to strengthen coordination and planning, as well as a DFID Humanitarian Advisor to work with Tanzania and Rwanda DFID offices to monitor the situation and develop appropriate programme responses).</p><p> </p><p>DFID is also the main donor to the international NGO consortium START network, which provides funding to international NGOs to rapidly respond to emergencies and build the capacity of local NGOs. DFID has provided £13.7million to the network for its global operations since April 2014. To support the humanitarian response to the Burundian situation, START has so far released £442,327 in Burundi, £275,281 in Rwanda, £ 430,203 in Tanzania and £330,000 in the DRC.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>DFID continues to work closely with the FCO to monitor the situation in Burundi and in the surrounding areas and to work with our partners to respond to needs on the ground.</p>
