In his speech of 30 June, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Prime Minister made clear that
as we recover from COVID-19, we must build back better, greener and faster, ensuring
that our economy will be cleaner, more sustainable, and more resilient. This applies
to all sectors of the economy, including those which are currently seen as difficult
to decarbonise, such as steel.

The Government is supporting the steel sector
throughout this difficult period, as well as providing the £250 million Clean Steel
Fund, which will help UK steel producers to reduce emissions in line with our target
to reach net zero emissions by 2050. This is complemented by the £315 million Industrial
Energy Transformation Fund to help energy intensive industries, such as steel, transition
away from carbon-intensive energy sources.

The Department publishes a pipeline,
identifying future steel requirements for all public infrastructure and construction
projects annually. An update of this pipeline will be published shortly. We have also
introduced steel-specific procurement guidance that requires Government Departments
and public bodies to consider social and environmental factors when procuring steel.
