answer text <p>Highways England have confirmed that between 1 July 2016 and 3 September 2016, 267 incidents were recorded as suicides or attempted suicides on the strategic road network.</p><p> </p><p>Highways England are currently moving to a new incident management system and are only able to provide data up to 3 September 2016 at this time. answer text <p>The Department for Transport has not made a specific assessment of the age of tyres fitted to vehicles involved in collisions. Official statistics indicate where, in the opinion of the attending police officer, a tyre was illegal, defective or under inflated and may have contributed to the accident. In 2014, 2015 and 2016 there were respectively 714, 598 and 550 collisions where tyres were considered to be a contributory factor.</p><p>The Department first issued guidance in 2013, which was subsequently updated, most recently in October 2016, recommending tyres over 10 years old should not be fitted to front steering axles, but only at the rear on twin wheels. A year after the guidance was published, a further survey of older PSVs was carried out by DVSA. This survey indicated a reduction in the average age of tyres fitted in the PSV fleet and demonstrated widespread compliance with the advice.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Highways England currently has a £15m programme to roll out rapid chargepoints at least every 20 miles along 95% of the strategic road network. As part of the Autumn Statement 2016, a further £80m was made available for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The Government intends to set out its plans for this funding as part of the Zero Emission Road Transport Strategy due to be published by March 2018.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Office for Low Emission Vehicles has a number of schemes in place to support the installation of electric vehicle chargepoints across the UK. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme provides a grant of up to £500 to install chargepoints at domestic properties with access to offstreet parking. The Workplace charging scheme is available to businesses, charities, and public sector organisations to install chargepoints for their employees and fleets. A grant of £300 for each socket is available, up to a maximum of 20. Local authorities can apply for the Onstreet Residential Chargepoint Scheme which provides grant funding to install onstreet chargepoints for local residents that lack access to off-street parking, up to a maximum of £7,500 per chargepoint.</p><p> </p><p>The Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill, introduced on 18 October, includes powers to expand deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure across the UK, with requirements for provision at motorway service areas and large fuel retailers.</p>

However, the Government recommends that users take out a third-party insurance policy.</p><p> </p><p>A compulsory insurance regime has the potential to penalize older or disabled people unfairly. answer text <p>The Department has published guidance for local authorities and practitioners on designing shared space schemes in Local Transport Note 1/11: Shared Space.</p><p> </p><p>To inform the advice given in the Local Transport Note, the Department commissioned an extensive research project in 2010, more information on which can be found at <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shared-space" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/shared-space</a>. This included qualitative research with a number of different road user types: visually impaired pedestrians; mobility impaired pedestrians; pedestrians with learning difficulties; pedestrians who are deaf or hard of hearing; non-disabled pedestrians; and drivers.</p><p> </p><p>We have been working with the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, which has been carrying out a review of 12 shared space and other street design schemes. This will report soon, and provide recommendations for further work in this area.</p><p> </p><p>The draft Accessibility Action Plan, currently out for consultation, includes an action for us to consider CIHT’s recommendations, when received, and how to take them forward, by the end of 2017.</p>
