answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/03/2017 answer text <p>The UK is currently in line with the trajectory set out in the Renewable Energy Directive, having met the Directive’s interim targets for 2011/12 and 2013/14.</p><p>We are making good progress towards the next interim target, requiring an average of 7.47% of energy to come from renewables across 2015 and 2016. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 07/03/2017 answer text <p>The Government is firmly committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving to a low carbon economy in a cost-effective way for households and businesses. All biomass power plants in the UK are required to meet mandatory sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions criteria.</p><p> </p><p>As the Chatham House report points out, biomass can be sourced in either low or higher carbon manners, depending on the forestry techniques and the types of wood used.</p><p> </p><p>Our analysis[1] shows that sawdust and sawmill residues made up 43% of material used, forestry residues comprising branches, tops and bark made up 28%, thinnings amounted to less that 14% of all biomass feedstocks, with the remaining 15% made up of materials such as waste wood.</p><p> </p><p>The Department keeps under review the level of subsidies available to biomass technologies and monitors the sustainability of biomass used in heat and power generation. In 2014 Innovate UK funded a study examining the feasibility of developing a pilot scale reactor for six molten salt reactor designs. In 2015 the Government commissioned the Techno-Economic Assessment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), to which a molten salt reactor developer contributed evidence. A thriving shale industry could involve a wide range of local jobs, in construction supply, transport, facilities support and consultancy. Shale gas development would in turn support jobs in sectors such as the chemical industry, much of which relies on natural gas as a feedstock.</p><p> </p><p>The Government believe it is important that communities which host shale development see a share of the economic benefits. To ensure that this happens, a community benefits package has been brought forward by industry. Energy suppliers were required to roll out advanced meters to their larger non-domestic energy users by April 2014, ie electricity premises in profile classes 5-8, and gas premises with annual consumption of greater than 732 MWh.
