answer text <p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>The Data and Communications Company (DCC) is consulting on options for moving SMETS1 meters into the new national smart metering data and communications infrastructure to make them interoperable between energy suppliers when customers switch supplier (<a href="https://www.smartdcc.co.uk/media/409998/iepfr_consultation_-_published.pdf" target="_blank">https://www.smartdcc.co.uk/media/409998/iepfr_consultation_-_published.pdf</a>). Following consultation, the DCC will submit a report on enrolment options to the Government in Spring 2017. The timetable for completion of the DCC’s work on interoperability is dependent on the outcome of the consultation.</p><p> </p><p>In advance of moving SMETS1 meters into the DCC, industry is separately developing interim solutions that could enable consumers with SMETS1 meters to retain their smart services upon switching supplier. Those solutions are scheduled to begin testing from 2017.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p>

This is up and running in the majority of the country and will be available across the country in the next few weeks.</p><p> </p><p>Work by both the Data and Communications Company and SMETS1 communications service providers is underway on ways to make SMETS1 meters interoperable. answer text <p>As the Data and Communications Company’s communications service provider for the north region (which includes Scotland), Arqiva is contracted to provide Wide Area Network (WAN) coverage of at least 99.5% of GB premises by the end of 2020. This level of coverage compares favourably with other technologies, such as mobile and broadband networks.</p><p> </p><p>Arqiva is on track to deliver its contractual coverage commitments, having already achieved coverage of more than 80% of premises in the north region. Energy suppliers will be made aware of the areas in which WAN is available at any point in time, and can plan their rollout accordingly.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The roll-out of SMETS1 meters is enabling consumers to take control of their energy use, save money and receive accurate bills, as energy suppliers trial, test and optimise their approaches prior to the main phase of the roll-out.</p><p> </p><p>Households and small businesses with SMETS1 meters can still switch energy suppliers. If the new supplier can’t operate the meter in smart mode, the meter will continue accurately to record energy consumption and can be used in ‘traditional’ mode, with meter readings taken manually.</p><p> </p><p>Work is underway to make existing SMETS1 meters interoperable with the DCC. answer text <p>During the current Foundation Stage of the roll-out of smart metering, energy suppliers are installing smart meters using their own communications systems, which typically use mobile phone network services. The Government does not hold information on the adequacy of the coverage of these communications systems.</p><p>For the main installation stage beginning later this year, the Data and Communications Company (DCC) is putting in place a shared communications network across GB to send and receive information from smart meters to energy suppliers, energy network operators and energy service companies via a Wide Area Network (WAN) using both cellular and long range radio technologies.</p><p>The DCC has contracted services to provide coverage of at least 99.25% of GB premises by the end of 2020 and has already achieved coverage of more than 80% of GB premises.</p> more like this
