answer text <p>Social sciences have a central role to play in contributing to the UK economy and society, and the challenges set out in the industrial strategy. UKRI through the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Research England have a range of mechanisms to help deliver benefits from social science, including support for commercialisation;</p><p> </p><ul><li>ESRC funding for impact activities from research projects can be requested via their “Pathways to Impact”. (<em>Data from ResearchFish shows that 29 spinouts from ESRC funding have been registered with Companies House between 2010 and 2017.</em>)</li><li>ESRC also funds Impact Acceleration Accounts (IAAs) at 25 universities to accelerate the impact of research.</li><li>Research England support via Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) (currently £210 million per year) for English universities for a range of knowledge exchange activities. Each institution decides how to deploy this according to their own strategic priorities, some will support commercialisation of social sciences.</li><li>Research England has also awarded £5m from the Connecting Capability Fund to London School of Economics, in partnership with the Universities of Manchester and Sussex, for “ASPECT” (A Social sciences Platform for Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Transformation) to develop a “globally leading social sciences commercialisation ecosystem.” This expects to create new companies to improve productivity and solve the most pressing social challenges.</li></ul><p> </p><p>In addition, a number of calls announced in Wave 2 of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund have included and embedded social science, and UKRI will ensure that there are opportunities for social science to contribute to solving the ambitious challenges set out in the Fund.</p>

answer text <p>We announced long-term funding on 10 August, an additional £780 million to expand catapult centres which are fueling innovation across the country as part of the UK’s ambitious Industrial Strategy. This new funding backs Britain’s brightest talent – supporting work in high-tech labs, cutting edge factories and advanced training centres.</p><p> </p><p>This build on £180 million announced by my rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister for centres in the North East last month, taking the total of funding to almost £1 billion.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The Government has made clear its wish to negotiate a continued deep participation in the Galileo programme. In May, my rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister ordered that a GNSS taskforce deliver a detailed assessment of UK GNSS options in the event that we do not reach a satisfactory agreement on the Galileo programme to provide resilience to UK users as stated in the Strategic Defence and Security Review 2015.</p><p> </p><p>No departmental funding has been allocated for the full GNSS capability and the scoping phase of work will need to be completed before any decision can be taken on whether to proceed.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>Our Industrial Strategy recognises the role of new markets like space launch in driving growth across the UK. The Government is delivering a major programme to enable companies to offer small satellite launch and sub-orbital spaceflight from UK spaceports.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Space Agency has considered 26 proposals for grant funding to kick-start satellite launch and spaceflight operations in the UK.</p><p> </p><p>On Monday we announced £31.5 million in funding to enable satellites to be launched from Sutherland, Scotland, which aims to be the first vertical spaceport to launch satellites into space from mainland Europe.</p><p> </p><p>Alongside this, we have also announced plans, subject to business case, for up to £2 million of funding for airports such as Newquay, Glasgow Prestwick and Snowdonia planning to build the market for horizontal spaceflight using air-launched rockets and sub-orbital spaceplanes.</p> more like this

answer text <p>My rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced in May that the Government is developing options for a domestic satellite navigation system as a contingency measure in the event that the European Commission and EU27 Member States do not offer acceptable terms for continued UK participation in Galileo.</p><p> </p><p>Initial analysis undertaken in partnership with UK industry indicates that a UK Global Navigation Satellite System could cost between £3-5 billion over a ten-year build phase. In a subsequent steady state period, the annual operating and replenishment cost for a UK system is estimated to be comparable with the expected cost of continued UK participation in the Galileo programme (around £200m per annum).</p><p> </p><p>Further analysis and study is ongoing with UK industry in order to provide greater clarity on the options for a UK GNSS, the costs and benefits and the start date of full services. During this early study phase of the programme, no significant liabilities have arisen.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>As part of our future partnership with the EU, the UK will look to establish an ambitious future agreement on science and innovation that ensures the valuable research links between us continue to grow.</p><p> </p><p>The UK would like to participate in EU research and development projects after 2020 and would like the option to fully associate to the excellence-based European research and innovation programmes, including Horizon Europe (the successor to Horizon 2020) and Euratom Research and Training.</p><p> </p><p>Such an association would involve an appropriate UK financial contribution linked to a suitable level of influence in line with the contribution and benefits the UK brings.
