answer text There are seven offshore gas fields off the coast of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Leviathan, Tamar, Dalit, Gaza Marine (aka Marine 1), Noa (aka Marine 2), Mari B and Nir). Currently, only the Mari B and Tamar fields, controlled by Israel, are being exploited. Marine 1/Gaza Marine lies entirely within the control of the Palestinian Authority. Marine 2/Noa straddles the Gaza/Israeli maritime border and so has been split on that basis into two fields: Noa South (under the control of the Palestinian Authority) and Noa (under the control of Israel). This issue has been discussed at EU level in the context of how to facilitate a sustainable and long-term solution to the energy crisis in Gaza. more like this

answer text The coalition, which includes a number of regional partners, as well as ‘western’ nations, takes every possible precaution to avoid civilian casualties, unlike the ISIL terrorists who show no respect for human rights or human life within the territory they control. Coalition targets are selected with the utmost care, the times of attack are carefully chosen and precision guided weapons are used. We are not aware of UK strikes causing civilian casualties. more like this

answer text The UK has had no discussions with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, about The Gambia’s return to the Commonwealth. The decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth was an executive decision taken solely by Gambian President Jammeh. Although the Commonwealth Secretary-General has publicly stated that The Gambia’s return would be welcomed, President Jammeh has made it clear that he will not reverse his decision. If The Gambia did decide to return to the Commonwealth, it would need to make a formal application to the Secretary-General. more like this

answer text The Government remains fully committed to the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, lodged at the United Nations as treaty number 23391. We regularly reiterate this commitment with the Chinese government. We have made clear our legitimate interest in developments in Hong Kong under the Joint Declaration, and we do of course expect China to continue to recognise this. Our Ambassador to China recently raised this with the Chinese Vice Premier and the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge (Mr Hammond) recently raised this with the Chinese Foreign Minister and I personally raised it with Hong Kong’s Secretary for Justice. The Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron) also restated our shared commitment with China as co-signatories of the Joint Declaration during Premier Li’s visit to the UK in June. The Foreign Secretary will continue to report regularly to Parliament on the implementation of the Joint Declaration.

answer text The Government is in close contact with partner agencies, including the UN, on the humanitarian situation in Iraq. We have not received any information or requests that would suggest that humanitarian assistance is required on Mount Sinjar but we continue to monitor the situation closely. The Government is providing £39.5 million of humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis in Iraq. All UK aid is distributed on the basis of need to ensure that civilians are not discriminated against on the grounds of race, religion or ethnicity. more like this

answer text The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) no longer holds information pertaining to the cost of collating the response given by the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, the hon. Member for Sheffield Heeley (Meg Munn) on 15 September 2008 (PQ 218988). The guide to Parliamentary work (available on the Cabinet Office website at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-to-parliamentary-work and already in the Library of the House) sets out that Government departments can refuse to answer a question where the cost of responding to that question would be above the disproportionate cost threshold, which is currently set at £850. The FCO has calculated that any answer which involves consulting all Ambassadors and High Commissioners in our overseas Network would exceed this threshold. more like this
