star this property answer text <p>We recently published the bidding prospectus for Freeports in England, setting out how ports can apply for Freeport status, and further details on our proposals for the policy. Areas across England, including air, rail and sea ports, have until the 5 February 2021 to submit bids for Freeport status. star this property answer text <p>The government announced in October 2016 that it would not be continuing with proposals to remove the restrictions on the sale of existing annuities.</p><p> </p><p>As these proposals progressed it became increasingly clear that the conditions required for a competitive market to emerge, with multiple buyers and sellers of annuities, could not be balanced with sufficient consumer protections. This could have led to consumers receiving poor value for their annuity income streams and suffering higher costs in the sales process. Consumer protection is a top priority for the government and it would not have been acceptable to allow a market to develop which could produce poor outcomes for consumers.</p><p> </p><p>There are no plans to review the decision not to continue with proposals for a secondary market in annuities at this time.</p><p> </p> more like this

The government has pledged to level the playing field between the high street and online giants, incentivise investment, tackle empty properties and support entrepreneurship.</p><p> </p><p>The government will work closely with all stakeholders, including those businesses that shoulder the greatest burden from business rates, as it develops the detail of its reforms. star this property answer text <p>As set out in the manifesto, the government is committed to a fairer business rates system and to levelling the playing field between online giants and high streets.</p><p> </p><p>Currently, the retail sector accounts for approximately 21% of total value of the business rates tax base, but only contributes 5% to Gross Value Added (GVA). As a result of the 2023 revaluation, business rates paid by the retail sector fell by an estimated 20%. Conversely, business rates increased by an estimated 27% for large distribution warehouses to reflect the growth in the online sales sector.</p><p> </p><p>As with any tax policy, decisions will be made at fiscal events. The government keeps the tax system under review and is open to receiving evidence from stakeholders.</p> more like this
