During the disruption to supply, the Department worked with industry, the devolved administrations, the National Health Service, members of the radiopharmaceutical community, and regulators to secure fair and equal access across the United Kingdom for patients, including for the treatment of cancer. Patients with the most critical needs were given priority.
more like this

star this property answer text
It is of great concern that approximately 25% of children aged between 11 and 15 years old have tried vaping. Evidence suggests vaping products are regularly promoted in a way that appeals to children, despite the risks of nicotine addiction.

That is why we announced strong measures in the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to ban the advertisement and sponsorship of all vapes and nicotine products. It will also stop vapes from being deliberately targeted at children, providing new powers to limit flavours and packaging, and changing how and where they are displayed in shops.

The Department ran a public consultation in October 2023 which received responses from the vaping industry. The consultation informed the development of the current Tobacco and Vapes Bill. The bill contains a statutory duty to consult on the use of regulation-making powers related to vaping and other measures. We will consult with the vaping industry at the appropriate time.
more like this

Goods that are subject to trade defence measures are treated as ‘at risk’.

In these scenarios, the Windsor Framework provides a means to offset these costs. If goods do not subsequently enter the EU, the Duty Reimbursement Scheme can be used to claim back the full amount. The Customs Duty Waiver Scheme is also available for traders to waive the duties up to certain thresholds, regardless of the ultimate destination of the goods.
more like this

star this property answer text
The Care Quality Commission’s 2024 Maternity Survey indicates that women’s experiences of maternity services have mostly either remained similar to 2023, or have shown small levels of decline. Whilst there have been improvements to some areas of maternity and neonatal care provision, such as mental health support during pregnancy, we recognise that the survey shows that women are not always receiving the standard of care they should expect.

NHS England’s three-year delivery plan for maternity and neonatal services continues to make progress in delivering important improvements for services. For example, all women who have given birth now receive a six-to-eight-week postnatal check-up, and Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services now have full population coverage to support women with, or at risk of, mental health issues, with a range of treatments including support clinics, talking therapies, and pre-conception advice.

The Government recognises the need to go further to ensure that women get the maternity care they deserve, and will use the results of this survey to help inform its next steps on improving maternity and neonatal care.

star this property answer text
The Department welcomes the publication of the Innovation Ecosystem Programme (IEP) report, and is encouraged to see the National Health Service continue to engage in how it can better utilise life sciences innovation.

The Department agrees with the fundamental thesis of the IEP, that innovation will be foundational to delivering an NHS fit for the future, and the United Kingdom’s £108 billion life sciences sector can be an engine for driving both this reform and economic growth. The Department also recognises that there are currently hurdles and barriers to the swift adoption and spread of innovation, and we must work to reduce and remove these.

Research demonstrates that NHS staff who are research and innovation active are more satisfied in their roles, and provide higher quality patient care. There will be further consideration of how the Government and NHS England can support the workforce to engage actively in testing, adopting, and scaling innovation in the upcoming 10-Year Health Plan and Life Sciences Sector Plan, both of which we plan to publish in the spring.

This advice is provided to the Government to inform, develop, and make policy.

In the JCVI’s statement summarising the advice for the RSV programme, the committee stated that an extension to the initial programme would be considered when there is more certainty about the protection provided by the vaccination in the very elderly and evidence of the real-world impact of the programme in the 75 to 80-year-old cohort.

Following an assessment of specific individual clinical situations, a doctor such as a general practitioner or hospital consultant may choose to prescribe vaccines outside of the national programme, under clinical discretion.

more like this
