Disruption to the oil pipeline has reduced the South Sudanese government's oil production capabilities and subsequently their income, causing inflationary pressures and an increase in food prices - the UK Government continues to monitor the economic situation closely. South Sudan is facing its own humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the Sudan conflict, with 9 million people expected to need humanitarian assistance in 2024. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/08/2023 answer text <p>UK officials have had various contacts with representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPMN-N) factions and other groups. In these contacts, we have demanded that the warring parties respect calls for a ceasefire, engage in a meaningful peace process and grant immediate humanitarian access. The UK is working with a range of international partners, including counterparts from the Quad (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, UK, US), African and European countries, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union (AU) and the UN, to get the parties to the negotiating table and end hostilities in Sudan. On 12 July, we announced a package of six sanctions under the Sudan (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020, freezing the assets of three commercial entities linked to each party involved in the conflict. The UK has taken a leading role in supporting the wider processes for justice and accountability in Sudan and South Sudan, and will continue to call for accountability for crimes committed in Abyei. We urge the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan to regularise meetings of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee and agree joint security mechanisms to improve stability in Abyei until its final status can be agreed. Most recently, the UK Special Representative to Sudan and South Sudan discussed Abyei with Sudanese authorities on 28 June in Khartoum, and will discuss this issue with the South Sudanese authorities in Juba later this month.</p><p>The UK Government is heavily engaged with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) and we welcomed their mandate renewal from the UN Security Council on 12 May. We join the UN Secretary-General's call for the African Union to intensify its mediation efforts to help reach a political solution for Abyei. Over the past year, the UN Security Council has ensured that UNISFA's mandate better equips the mission to respond quickly to security incidents and to place greater emphasis on community engagement.</p><p>We are working with the UN and the humanitarian community in Sudan and South Sudan to address humanitarian needs in Abyei. As part of this, in 2021 we contributed £27 million to the humanitarian response in Sudan via partners, including the World Food Programme. This year in South Sudan we will reach 2 million people with some form of humanitarian assistance and support 400,000 girls to access education, including in the Abyei region. We are supporting IGAD's efforts to revitalise the 2015 peace agreement through its High Level Revitalisation Forum.</p><p>We are urging IGAD to take action against those who have violated the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, signed in December by all parties. Following the declaration of famine, the Secretary of State for International Development, my Rt Hon. Friend, the Member for Witham (Ms Patel) announced a £100 million package of emergency assistance that will help to provide vital life-saving nutritional, health and livelihoods support for the people of South Sudan. Together with our international partners, the UK continues to pursue every opportunity to call on all parties in the conflict in South Sudan urgently to cease all hostilities, ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it most and engage in a genuine, inclusive dialogue. Multilaterally, we are lobbying for support of a UN arms embargo, and continue to support the imposition of sanctions against those who would continue to block the path to peace.
