The Government has not introduced any Global Human Rights sanctions against the Taliban since they took power in 2021, but we keep all evidence and potential designations under close review. More broadly, officials from the UK Mission to Afghanistan regularly press Taliban acting ministers on human rights abuses in Afghanistan, including against women and girls.
more like this

star this property answer text
The criteria for ex-officio eligibility to attend the Accession Council was based primarily on whether Privy Counsellors were serving in a senior parliamentary, judicial or Church post at the time of Demise. This was the most practical way to reflect the fact that the role of the Privy Council is to advise on the exercise of prerogative powers and certain functions assigned to The King and the Council by Act of Parliament.

There are over 720 Privy Counsellors but only those currently serving in senior parliamentary, judicial and Church roles play an active role in Privy Council business. The majority of Privy Counsellors have no active involvement in Privy Council business; some Counsellors have not been actively involved in Privy Council business for decades.

Additional criteria used to determine ex-officio eligibility included:

Privy Counsellors who were senior, full-time Members of the Royal Household at the time of Demise.

Former office holders who had a close working relationship with the Sovereign (former Prime Ministers, Archbishops and Lord Presidents).

Former opposition leaders (representing Privy Counsellors from all political parties who no longer have an active role in Privy Council business).

star this property answer text
The UK remains concerned about the political situation in Zimbabwe, particularly the lack of accountability for human rights violations and restrictions to freedom of assembly. The recent attacks on opposition leader Nelson Chamisa were concerning. In response, on 22 October, the UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe called for all citizens' freedoms to be guaranteed as set out in Zimbabwe's constitution, all incidents to be investigated, and for all violence and threats to be unequivocally condemned. The former Minister for Africa raised the human rights situation in Zimbabwe with Foreign Minister Shava on 9 June.

The UK regularly discusses the political situation in Zimbabwe with its international partners, including South Africa and the African Union, and we remain committed to working in partnership to identify solutions. We continue to monitor developments closely, regularly encouraging the Government of Zimbabwe to live up to their own constitution and ensure the opposition, civil society and journalists are allowed to operate without harassment.

star this property answer text
The government’s policy is to provide support to a maximum of two children in tax credits to ensure that those who receive income related benefits face the same financial choices as those supporting themselves solely through work. The government acknowledges the immense value of care given by non-parental carers. The government has therefore included an exception to this policy for third and subsequent children taken on through kinship care arrangements, recognising that people taking on additional children in this way are not able to make the same choices about the number of children in their family.
more like this
