answer text
We welcome the mechanism agreed by Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the UN to facilitate the import of construction materials. This is an important first step. Reconstruction will require a durable ceasefire, an agreed approach on security, predictable and sustained access for people and goods into and out of Gaza, and good governance arrangements. Only then will donors have the assurances they need to be able to support the reconstruction effort.

more like this

answer text
Under the Government's transparency commitment, information is published each month on DFID’s Development Tracker website (https://devtracker.dfid.gov.uk) on all projects in Jordan and Lebanon. This enables public scrutiny of project documents, budgets and expenditure. Where possible, all DFID Annual Reviews and Project Completion Reports for Syria Crisis response projects are published. In some instances details of operations need to be withheld from publication on the grounds of protecting the safety of staff and humanitarian partners. Progress and monitoring reports completed by UN agencies and NGO partners are used to inform the DFID reporting process but are not published by DFID.
more like this

We commend the generosity that Turkey has shown towards those fleeing the conflict in Syria. The UK has allocated £34 million to support Syrian refugees in Turkey, including food, shelter and primary healthcare. The UK is also working in partnership with Turkish institutions on targeted projects to build their capacity to tackle irregular migration. The EU is currently working in partnership with the Turkish government to explore options for increased support to Turkey. The UK is engaged in this process.
more like this

answer text
To date, the UK has allocated £304 million in Lebanon and £193 million in Jordan to support Syrian refugees and vulnerable host communities. This allocation has effectively delivered humanitarian and development support where needs are greatest and most unmet across both countries. For example, as of June 2015 in Jordan and Lebanon respectively, 1,684,800 and 2,032,500 food rations have been delivered providing food for one person for one month.

The effectiveness of the UK’s humanitarian response in Jordan and Lebanon is assessed regularly through progress reports from funded agencies monitoring their achievements against plans outlined in their funding agreements. Progress is followed up through regular discussions and periodic field monitoring visits to project sites by DFID staff based in our Embassies in Amman and Beirut and from our headquarters in the UK. In addition, projects are formally reviewed on an annual basis and in some cases we also commission independent evaluations.

answer text
The UK is at the forefront of the response to the Syria crisis. UK support is reaching hundreds of thousands of people affected in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt. The UK has pledged over £2.3 billion, our largest ever response to a single humanitarian crisis. Spending money in the region builds people’s ability to cope where they are. For most refugees, their first choice is to stay close to home, and to return to Syria.

Through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation scheme, the UK is helping some of the most vulnerable refugees who cannot be supported effectively in the region and whose needs can only be met in countries like the UK. We will resettle up to 20,000 Syrians in need of protection during this Parliament. We are working closely with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to identify vulnerable Syrians that they deem in need of resettlement, using their established vulnerability criteria.

However, given the scale of displacement in the Middle East and with many millions of people in need, it is essential to provide assistance to those most in need in the region and actively seeking an end to the crisis. Compared with aid, resettlement can only ever support a comparatively small number of people in need.

Home Office are responsible for the overall programme budget.

Of this total we have allocated £304 million in Lebanon, £193 million in Jordan, £34 million to Turkey, £19 million to Iraq and the remainder across the region.

We have not earmarked our funding for specific refugee camps across the region. We support a range of partners including the UN and international non-governmental organisations that work both in camps and in host communities to provide a range of support for refugees. This includes shelter, water, healthcare and education. The vast majority of refugees in countries neighbouring Syria live in host communities. There are no formal camps in Lebanon; rather refugees are disbursed across the country in host communities.
more like this
