answer text
We are making progress to meet our commitments, made at the World Humanitarian Summit, on localisation. Globally DFID is the largest donor to the Country Based Pooled Funds and continues to invest in civil society consortia that support localisation. This includes through the centrally managed Disasters and Emergencies Preparedness Programme (DEPP) which invests in the longer-term capacity development of national and local NGOs in contexts of high humanitarian risk. In East Africa, DEPP supports 15 projects in Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan. Where we are required to deliver rapidly and across multiple contexts, such as in the east Africa food crisis, international assistance remains necessary to deliver at scale.
more like this

answer text
There is a credible risk of four famines in 2017: South Sudan (where famine has already been declared), Nigeria, Yemen and Somalia. We assess that in Yemen and Somalia the situation is deteriorating, whilst in Nigeria the situation may be beginning to improve in areas that the international community can access. This assessment is based on data from a number of sources, and corroborated with global experts from a range of international agencies.

We have issued a call to action to the international community to step up their response; provided lifesaving treatment for acute malnutrition, food, water and emergency healthcare; and are working closely with other donors and partners to ensure a more efficient and effective response to the crises.
more like this

Last year we delivered food assistance to more than 1 million people, and treated 34,000 children at risk of death from severe under-nourishment in North East Nigeria. We have used our funding to encourage others to contribute and are pleased that at the Oslo Donor Conference a number of other countries stepped up their support. The UK recently announced a significant £1.1 billion pledge to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. The 2013 review of the 2011 UK HIV Position Paper ‘Towards Zero Infections’ identified the integration of HIV with wider development needs as a key strategic priority.
