star this property answer text <ol><li>The Prime Minister has publicly stated that education, particularly standing up for the right of every girl in the world to have 12 years of quality education, is a priority for the UK. Between 2009 and 2018, the Government spent £7.08 billion bilaterally from the public purse to support the fulfilment of the UN sustainable development goal on education. This does not include all multilateral spend. Between 2015 and 2019 DFID supported 14.8 million children to gain a decent education, of which at least 5.8 million were girls. UKAid is spent in the countries that need it the most. From 2015 to 2018, the largest number of children supported by DFID education programmes was in Africa, where the majority of out of school children live. Most of the children supported by DFID’s education programmes live in fragile states.</li></ol> more like this

star this property answer text <p> </p><p>The UK is supporting disaggregation of data by sex and age in the Post 2015 development framework which will succeed the Millennium Development Goals. This will help ensure no-one is left behind, including girls in Education. The UK International Development Gender Equality Act which was passed in May 2014 now makes it law to consider, before providing development assistance, how the assistance will contribute to reducing gender inequality.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Supporting gender equality in education remains a key priority for the UK government and we are increasingly focussing on marginalised girls both in terms of access and attainment. For example, the Girls Education Challenge funded by UK aid is the largest donor funded education programme which aims to support up to one million marginalised girls to be in school and learning which will help to transform their lives.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>A focus on improving access to school and learning outcomes drives DFID’s approach to investment in education in priority countries.</p><p>DFID has pledged to support 11 million children with an education between 2015 and 2020. Not just to get children into school, but to ensure they are learning. All of DFID’s education programmes prioritise learning and we are seeing results; for example the Girls Education Challenge has increased the learning outcomes in literacy and mathematics for 700,000 girls across 18 countries. Motivated, trained, effective teachers are essential for children to learn. In Tanzania we are rolling out in-service teacher training with a focus on literacy, numeracy and better pedagogy for over 45,000 teachers in 7 disadvantaged regions.</p><p>In Bangladesh, DFID support the ‘English in Action’ programme in which school teachers receive specially designed training modules and lesson plans directly to their low cost mobile phones. It has been shown to improve their teaching and is being modified for use in Nigeria. DFID is also working internationally to embed a global focus on the quality of education.</p><p>DFID championed the inclusion of learning indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals and increased support for international monitoring to track progress. We have commissioned rigorous impact evaluations to understand what works to improve learning and ensure good value for money is achieved.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

In recent months, DFID has announced three initiatives which demonstrate the UK’s continuing commitment to improving access to education in developing countries.</p><p>a) The Inclusive Education Initiative to support marginalised children, particularly those with disabilities, who find it the hardest to attend school.</p><p>b) In Nigeria, the Partnership for Learning for All programme, which will benefit up to 2 million children through improved teaching, school quality and education delivery.</p><p>c) The global Education Technology Hub, which is researching solutions that work in low-income settings to increase access to learning materials and help improve how children learn.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>All programmes are monitored on a regular and ongoing basis by staff and external partners using a variety of tools to track progress against the results framework. This includes due diligence assessments, field visits, Annual Reviews, Project Completion Reviews, and delivery plans. Ministers are made aware of any programmes which are not on track to deliver the expected outputs and will discuss with teams whether they should be restructured or closed. DFID’s Internal Audit Department conducts periodic in-depth reviews of programmes, including visits to all country offices at least every two years.</p><p>Our network of education advisors regularly review the content which is taught in our education programmes. We also support a range of programmes which develop new educational materials to improve learning outcomes. For example, the resources of our Connecting Classrooms programme help young people to develop the knowledge, skills and values (e.g. critical thinking and tolerance) to live and work in a globalised economy.</p>

star this property answer text <p>At this year’s UN General Assembly, the UK announced £515 million in new support to help get over 12 million children – half of them girls – into school. This includes a £300 million pledge for the innovative new International Finance Facility for Education that will help mobilise an additional $5 billion of investment for education in Africa and Asia, with a focus on the most marginalised children.</p><p> </p><p>This funding, in line with the Prime Minister’s pledge to make sure all girls have 12 years of quality education, will give millions of girls around the world the chance to go to school, supporting economic growth and improving women’s rights.</p><p> </p><p>More broadly, the UK is committed to promoting gender equality and protecting and empowering adolescent girls, and we also announced a new £600 million aid package to provide millions more women and girls in the developing world access to family planning.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Coping with climate change is a challenge that faces us all and it is having wide ranging effects on economies, livelihoods, access to education and natural resources. The poorest communities, and girls and women within them, are likely to be hardest hit, which is why we are investing in building the resilience of the world’s poorest by doubling our International Climate Finance which since 2011, has helped 57 million people cope with the effects of climate change.</p><p>We know that girls are two and half times more likely to be out of school in emergencies, including climate related emergencies. That’s why at the G7 Summit in 2019, the Prime Minister announced an unprecedented £90 million commitment for education in emergencies over 4½ years. This included £85 million to Education Cannot Wait the global fund for education in emergencies. UK support has helped the fund reach over a million of the most vulnerable girls, including those affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The £90 million investment is a key plank of the PM’s plan to ensure more girls benefit from 12 years of education.</p><p>As the leading global actor on girl’s education, we will continue to make substantial investments supporting marginalised girls in education. The UK’s Flagship Girls’ Education Challenge, the largest global fund to girls’ education, is now supporting up to 1.5 million girls across 17 countries.</p>

star this property answer text <p>DFID has a dedicated Education Research Team with a £12m per annum portfolio of innovative research on education systems, raising learning outcomes, and learning and skills beyond primary education. This research portfolio has a particular focus on disadvantaged groups and the pursuit of an equitable start to learning for all. Research commissioned through this team, along with the UK Research Community, has ensured that teachers, equity and systems reform are at the centre of DFID’s new education policy.</p><p>DFID has commissioned rigorous reviews of existing evidence and, as a result of the findings, concluded a focus on children with disabilities. For example, one research project, which is funded by DFID through the UK Economic and Social Research Council, investigates different modalities for teaching literacy in deaf communities in India, Ghana and Uganda. Wider inclusion and equity issues are fundamental to all DFID’s education research programmes, and we seek to mainstream them.</p>
