star this property answer text Whilst security for claimants and those returning to their land is a key concern, our 2013 Human Rights Report (released on 10 April 2014) notes that some progress has been made on the issue of land restitution. Since January 2012 there have been 64,815 registered land restitution claims. In his recent meeting with President Santos on 7 November, the Deputy Prime Minister, the right hon. Member for Sheffield Hallam (Mr Clegg), welcomed the Colombian government’s efforts to improve respect for human rights in Colombia, including through its land restitution and victims reparations processes. Our Embassy in Bogota runs several human rights projects to help improve Colombia’s land registry process, increase access to protection measures and raise awareness of the UN guiding principles on business and human rights. Officials from our Embassy also meet regularly with indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities and we also funded a project aimed at developing the role of organisations in protecting communities’ rights to the territories. We are following closely several emblematic land restitution cases; our Ambassador raised the cases of the Curvaradó and Jiguamandó communities with the Ministry of the Interior in July and acts as an observer on the case.

star this property answer text While laws exist to protect the economic rights of women in Zimbabwe, they are frequently undermined by discriminatory practices, customary law and lack of implementation. In politics, it should be noted that there is a relatively high proportion of females in Parliament. However, women and girls are also disproportionately affected by fragile basic service provision and crumbling infrastructure. The Department for International Development’s programme in Zimbabwe continues to support progress on issues affecting women through work on economic and political empowerment, water and sanitation, health and education and skills development. more like this

star this property answer text We remain deeply concerned by the recent reports of a mass rape at Tabit village in North Darfur. We have called on the Government of Sudan to allow the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) unhindered access so that the UN can conduct a full investigation into these alleged appalling crimes. We note that UNAMID was granted access to Tabit on 9 November, but are concerned by reports that their investigations took place under the close observation of Sudanese security officials. It is important that UNAMID now continue with a thorough and impartial investigation and that all relevant information is included in future public communications. more like this

Although the number of claims has increased, the profile of Ethiopian asylum claims seen by the Home Office has not changed significantly. We regularly monitor events and support multilateral initiatives to tackle illegal migration such as the African Union-EU Khartoum process to tackle these issues. more like this

star this property answer text We judge that since 2011 a number of incremental steps have been made to strengthen the judiciary and to reform the security services in Bahrain. The UK is providing a package of technical assistance to support progress in line with the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry and UN Universal Periodic Review. These include the establishment of the Ministry of Interior’s Ombudsman’s Office to receive complaints and to oversee and conduct investigations, the establishment of a Prisoners’ and Detainees’ Rights Commission and reform of the National Institute of Human Rights. The British Government continues to work closely with the Government of Bahrain to provide practical assistance in torture prevention, judicial reform, civil service capacity building and community neighbourhood policing. more like this

star this property answer text We have serious concerns about the use of punitive demolitions to destroy the homes of the families of Palestinian suspected terrorists by the Israeli authorities. On 20 November, a senior official from our Embassy in Tel Aviv raised these concerns with Alon Ushpiz, Political Director of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a joint demarche with EU partners. In separate discussions, officials from our Embassy in Tel Aviv have also registered concerns about this policy with a number of Israeli officials from the National Security Council and Prime Minister's Office. more like this

The EU continues to urge the parties to fully implement the temporary mechanism for monitoring and verification of reconstruction materials negotiated by the UN, Palestinian Authority and Israel, as an important step towards the necessary urgent opening of all crossing points.
