star this property answer text Whilst security for claimants and those returning to their land is a key concern, our 2013 Human Rights Report (released on 10 April 2014) notes that some progress has been made on the issue of land restitution. Since January 2012 there have been 64,815 registered land restitution claims. In his recent meeting with President Santos on 7 November, the Deputy Prime Minister, the right hon. Member for Sheffield Hallam (Mr Clegg), welcomed the Colombian government’s efforts to improve respect for human rights in Colombia, including through its land restitution and victims reparations processes. Our Embassy in Bogota runs several human rights projects to help improve Colombia’s land registry process, increase access to protection measures and raise awareness of the UN guiding principles on business and human rights. Officials from our Embassy also meet regularly with indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities and we also funded a project aimed at developing the role of organisations in protecting communities’ rights to the territories. We are following closely several emblematic land restitution cases; our Ambassador raised the cases of the Curvaradó and Jiguamandó communities with the Ministry of the Interior in July and acts as an observer on the case.

star this property answer text We have not raised this UN report with the Israeli authorities, but are working with them to ensure continued smooth access to Gaza for UK medical professionals as part of the Department for International Development's Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) programme. The EU continues to urge the parties to fully implement the temporary mechanism for monitoring and verification of reconstruction materials negotiated by the UN, Palestinian Authority and Israel, as an important step towards the necessary urgent opening of all crossing points. The EU continues to stress the importance of a change of the Israeli policy, allowing Gaza to trade normally and on a permanent basis. more like this

star this property answer text We have been discussing this matter with the Libyan authorities, not the Syrian government. While we do not intend to negotiate a compensation settlement with the Libyan authorities, once stability returns, and our Embassy re-opens, we will again encourage the Libyans to engage with UK victims seeking redress, including those seeking compensation and their legal representatives. The Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron), has said that he is committed to doing this and has asked the National Security Advisor to lead cross-government efforts to engage the Libyans on reconciliation initiatives. The Government will also continue to promote broad and lasting reconciliation between Libya and affected UK communities. more like this

While we have not made representations on this case, our views about the importance of freedom of expression as a universal human right are well known. We believe that people everywhere must be allowed to freely discuss and debate issues, challenge their governments and make informed decisions in accordance with international human rights law. Our broad strategic engagement with the United Arab Emirates provides an opportunity to openly discuss these issues. more like this

star this property answer text There are seven offshore gas fields off the coast of Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Leviathan, Tamar, Dalit, Gaza Marine (aka Marine 1), Noa (aka Marine 2), Mari B and Nir). Currently, only the Mari B and Tamar fields, controlled by Israel, are being exploited. Marine 1/Gaza Marine lies entirely within the control of the Palestinian Authority. Marine 2/Noa straddles the Gaza/Israeli maritime border and so has been split on that basis into two fields: Noa South (under the control of the Palestinian Authority) and Noa (under the control of Israel). This issue has been discussed at EU level in the context of how to facilitate a sustainable and long-term solution to the energy crisis in Gaza. more like this

star this property answer text The British Government has not recently discussed visa requirements for UK citizens visiting Kenya with the Kenyan government. British nationals require a visa to enter Kenya, which can be purchased on arrival. Within the EU, the European Commission only seeks coherence in visa requirements for Member States party to the Schengen Visa Code. The UK is not party to this code. Within the Commonwealth the UK is taking part in discussions which seek to facilitate the movement of Commonwealth citizens between member states. more like this
