answer text We are concerned at reports of detentions in relation to the 25th anniversary of Tiananmen Square and raised our concerns about this with the Chinese authorities during the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue on 20 May. The Minister of State, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Member for East Devon (Mr Swire), raised this issue with the Chinese authorities on 19 May and made a statement on this issue on 21 May. We also fully support the EU statement of 28 May calling for the release of all those imprisoned for the peaceful expression of their views. We were pleased to see that on 5 June, the Chinese authorities released a number of those arrested after attending an event to commemorate the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989. more like this

answer text <p>We monitor the human rights situation in China closely and engage with a wide range of stakeholders. We have ongoing concerns about restrictions to civil and political rights in China which we raise regularly with Chinese counterparts. We last held the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue on 19-20 May 2014, allowing us to raise concerns directly with Chinese authorities. We also raise our concerns publicly through the Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy and updates to it. Our Embassy in Beijing has contact with a range of civil society groups in China.</p><p>Ministers regularly raise our concerns with counterparts, including during high-level bilateral exchanges.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We have not made recent specific representations on animal welfare issues in China. However the UK is a leading supporter of co-ordinated international efforts to protect animal welfare. We hosted a high level conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade in London in February 2014, and over 40 countries, including China, participated. Chinese authorities have since passed a new law making the consumption of rare wild animals an offence, punishable by ten years in prison.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>We have followed Gao’s case closely and welcomed his release from prison on 7 August 2014. We are concerned by reports that he has been in ill health since his release, and that his movement is restricted. We urge the Chinese authorities to allow him access to adequate medical care, and to ensure that his rights to freedom of movement and communication are duly protected. <br><br>UK officials have repeatedly raised Gao’s case with the Chinese government, including during the most recent UK-China Human Rights Dialogue in May 2014, and again prior to his release. We highlight our range of human rights concerns in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy, and the quarterly updates to it.</p> more like this
