answer text We continue to work closely with the Nigerian authorities and our other partners in the search for the abducted Chibok girls. On 3 September, my Hon Friend, the Member for Southend and Rochford East (James Duddridge MP), the Minister for Africa, led the UK delegation to the Abuja ministerial meeting on security in Nigeria. At this meeting, he emphasised the importance of regional coordination between Nigeria and its neighbours in defeating Boko Haram and locating the girls. The Prime Minister has stressed to President Jonathan our continued commitment to helping the Nigerian Government find the girls. It is not yet clear what impact the recently announced ceasefire between the Nigerian security forces and Boko Haram might have on the missing Chibok girls. We are monitoring events closely. more like this

answer text The UK and Thailand have strong bilateral ties which are exemplified by a range of activities and programmes across the political, commercial, and cultural spectrum, for example strong trading and tourism links. We want our bilateral relationship to prosper, but in view of the rapid and serious deterioration of the democratic environment, we are reviewing the scope of our cooperation with Thailand. We are particularly concerned by restrictions on the freedoms of assembly, association and expression, and by the large numbers of arbitrary detentions we have seen since the coup was announced. more like this

answer text The Prime Minister, my right hon. Friend the Member for Witney (Mr Cameron) met Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in London in July. He noted the UK’s disappointment over Bangladesh’s parliamentary election in January 2014 with more than half of constituencies uncontested. They agreed on the importance of open society and a political system in which democratic political participation and media freedoms are respected. We have also raised concerns about human rights violations with the government of Bangladesh in the aftermath of elections and have continued to encourage dialogue between Bangladesh’s political parties to strengthen democratic accountability and to put an end to the damaging 5-cycle of one-sided elections, electoral violence and instability. more like this

answer text I made clear in my response to Oral questions on 8 April that the UN Commission of Inquiry's report documents a persecution of christians which is truly shocking. The UK played a leading role in ensuring a strong Human Rights Council resolution in response to this report. My Written Ministerial Statement on 31 March 2014 sets out a summary of the concrete measures in the DPRK resolution to ensure the work of the COI continues in order that those responsible for human right violations and crimes against humanity will one day be brought to account. more like this

answer text
We welcome the passing of the UN Human Rights Council resolution on Sri Lanka on 27 March, which established an international investigation into alleged violations and abuses of international law on both sides of the military conflict in Sri Lanka, in addition to calling for progress on human rights and reconciliation. The UK was a main co-sponsor of the resolution and will continue to give full support to the Office of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in establishing an international investigation, as mandated by the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN resolution calls upon the Sri Lankan government to co-operate with the OHCHR in the implementation of the resolution. We continue to urge the Sri Lankan government to co-operate with the OHCHR, and to view the international investigation as an opportunity to address the grievances of the past in the spirit of lasting peace and reconciliation. We also continue to call for the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, and the Commonwealth Secretary-General, to use their leverage to encourage Sri Lanka’s co-operation.
