answer text There are no formal targets in place for increasing the number of women who participate in the New Enterprise Allowance scheme. Latest statistics show that since the launch of NEA in 2011 to the end of March 2014, there were 46,000 allowance claims, of which 15,720 were from women. The weekly allowance is payable when the participant closes their claim to benefits and commences trading. The rate of take up of NEA by women is approximately one third of the total. This is consistent with the proportion of women claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (the benefit claimed by the majority of NEA participants), demonstrating the success of the scheme in attracting all groups to access this support. more like this

answer text
a) The Removal of the Spare Room Subsidy is estimated to save around £500 million per year in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

b) In 2013/14 total discretionary housing payment expenditure by local authorities across Great Britain was £176,393,889. This figure includes amounts spent by Local Authorities over and above their government contribution in DHP funding. At the end of the financial year, 240 out of 380 LAs across Great Britain under-spent by £13,285,430 against the available government contribution. This was in addition to the £7,111,693 unallocated from the £20 million reserve fund.

Detailed information about discretionary housing payment expenditure was published in June 2014 and can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/322455/use-of-discretionary-housing-payments-june-2014.pdf

The Department confirmed on 30 April that it is now in discussion with relevant Local Authorities in the North West on the detailed planning to make that happen.

As with Jobseeker's Allowance, the Department does not hold forecasts of UC claimant numbers split by both borough, and then by marital status within that borough. Claimant numbers at this degree of detail will be influenced by a range of factors; these include likely local demographics and likely economic conditions within each borough. It is not possible to combine these in any meaningful way, and any such estimates might prove to be unreliable.

more like this

answer text
Where a Jobseeker’s Allowance claimant is required to participate in a Jobcentre course, they are given information, verbally and in writing, which includes details about the course itself, what they are required to do by way of participation, and whether they are still required to attend the Jobcentre and meet their benefit conditions whilst attending the course.

There are some circumstances where DWP can excuse a person from the requirement to sign on, in order to enable them to participate in a course. This includes those claimants who are participating as a full-time student on an employment related course for a maximum of two weeks.

However, in the majority of cases, claimants will be expected to sign on whilst participating in a course. Where conflicting appointments/course times arise, we make every effort to re-arrange claimants’ signing on arrangements.

If the decision is that the claimant is to continue attending the Jobcentre and the claimant fails to do so, without having a good reason, their benefit may be sanctioned.
