If new evidence comes to light, a witness decides to no longer support a prosecution or a co-defendant pleads guilty to the offence, the CPS will then review the case. If there is no longer sufficient evidence or if it is no longer in the public interest, the CPS will stop a prosecution.</p><p>The Transforming Summary Justice (TSJ) and Better Case Management (BCM) initiatives, introduced nationally, are recent programmes which will have a material and positive impact on both levels and timing of discontinuance. The pace of deployment has increased from 10,000 premises a week gaining availability of superfast broadband in early 2014 to 20,000 a week now and this will increase to 40,000 per week by the Summer of 2014.</p><p> </p><p>With respect to impact on SME's, the Broadband Impact Study – Impact Report, an expert report by analysts SQW (with Cambridge Econometrics), revealed the Government's investment in superfast broadband will deliver a major boost to the UK economy; for every £1 the government is investing in broadband, the UK economy will benefit by £20 by 2024. It also demonstrated that the benefits will be shared across the UK, helping the rebalancing of our economy; approximately 89 per cent of the benefits will be in areas outside London and the South East of England with rural areas set to benefit most.</p><p> </p><p>The report focussed on impacts of mass market broadband services – i.e. ‘affordable broadband' for SMEs and households – and estimated that by 2024, net annual GVA impacts attributable to intervention include:</p><p> </p><p>· £0.8 billion from safeguarding local enterprise employment,</p><p>· £5 billion from productivity growth for broadband-using firms,</p><p>· £0.3 billion from improved teleworker productivity, and</p><p>· £0.2 billion from increased labour force participation.</p><p> </p><p>The majority of these benefits will be to SMEs, and over half to rural areas.</p> answering member printed Lord Gardiner of Kimble question first answered 12/05/2014 12:00:00 answering member 4161 label Biography information for Lord Gardiner of Kimble

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/09/2017 answer text <p>We now have almost 700 military personnel, over 50 police, and a senior search and rescue adviser from the UK’s fire and rescue services in the Caribbean region to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. DFID has sent over 18 humanitarian and logistics advisers in the region, including humanitarian advisers in Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, and the British Virgin Islands, where they are supporting Governors and local authorities.</p><p>All UK personnel are deployed as part of a coordinated cross-Government response, bringing together military, aid, and consular effort. Across the affected area, our personnel have delivered urgent humanitarian relief, assisted in restoring vital infrastructure, and supported local institutions in maintaining law and order. We will continue to work closely with our advisors on the ground and with the Overseas Territories governments to deploy our specialists where they are most needed.</p><p>The Government will continue to do all it can to support those affected. However, young drivers are disproportionately involved in collisions.</p><p> </p><p>There is a difficult balance to strike between promoting young drivers safety and their freedom to access work and education.</p><p> </p><p>We won’t rule out further measures, but at present we are focussing our efforts on technological solutions.</p><p> </p><p>We commissioned research into how telematics can reduce accident rates among young drivers and the findings will help to shape future road safety policy. A description of the research requirement has been placed in the Libraries of both Houses.</p><p> </p><p>We expect phase one to be completed in April 2015. In Autumn Statement 2015, the Chancellor announced up to £250m for an off-road lorry area.</p><p> </p><p>Highways England completed a public consultation on proposals on 26 January 2016 and is now carefully assessing all the responses. Subject to the outcome of this assessment, the Government intends to make public its next steps shortly.</p><p> </p><p>As an interim measure, the Government secured the use of a site at Manston in North Kent last summer. This group monitors performance and passenger experience and it is absolutely committed to identifying improvements and ensuring rail passengers see the benefits of these improvements being delivered. Network Rail and Southeastern both need to show much greater improvement in their ability to fix faults quickly and communicate with their passengers more effectively.
