The UK has a strong history of upholding and promoting the principles of international
humanitarian law (IHL). The four Geneva Conventions of 1949 constitute the bedrock
treaties of IHL. There are no plans to seek reform of these globally recognised Conventions.
We believe that efforts should be directed primarily at improving compliance with
IHL. To this end, we consistently call on states and non-state actors engaged in armed
conflict to respect IHL and act in accordance with their obligations under it. We
are also an active participant in the intergovernmental process, facilitated by the
International Committee of the Red Cross and government of Switzerland, aimed at strengthening
respect for IHL.
