Reports of harassment of members of the Catholic church in Nicaragua are concerning.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">Freedom of religion or belief is a universal human right, and must be protected. The Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief tweeted about reports of harassment of members of the Catholic Church in Nicaragua on 10 August and is discussing it with members of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon highlighted our concern about the detention of Bishop Rolando Álvarez during his visit to the Holy See on 26 August.</ins></p><p> </p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">We have voiced the UK's deep concern about the ongoing deterioration of political and human rights in Nicaragua both with the Nicaraguan government and in multilateral fora. Reports of harassment of members of the Catholic church in Nicaragua are concerning. Freedom of religion or belief is a universal human right, and must be protected. The Prime Minister's Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief tweeted on the issue on 10 August and is discussing it with members of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance. Our Permanent Observer at the Organisation of American States also referred to the issue in a statement at a special meeting on the situation in Nicaragua on 12 August. Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon highlighted our concern about the detention of Bishop Rolando Álvarez during his visit to the Holy See on 26 August and he is due to give a statement on behalf of the UK about the human rights situation in Nicaragua at the UN Human Rights Council's Interactive Dialogue with the High Commissioner on 13 September. Through our Embassy in Brasilia, the UK continues to engage with the Brazilian Government, political parties and civil society organisations on the elections, including on the issues of the right to campaign freely and peacefully, and of security. It includes harrowing evidence, including first-hand accounts from victims, that shames China in the eyes of the international community.</p><p>The UK has already led international efforts to pressure China to change its behaviour. We have imposed sanctions, led joint statements at the UN, taken action to tackle forced labour in supply chains, funded research to expose China's actions, and consistently raised our concerns at the highest levels in Beijing.</p><p>Following the report's publication, we have raised our deep concerns about its findings with the Chinese Embassy in London as well as senior officials in Beijing. We led a strong international response to the coup, including through the G7 and UN Security Council (UNSC). On 27 July, we secured a UNSC statement condemning the military's execution of pro-democracy activists. We are working continuously to amplify the voices of the National Unity Consultative Council, the National Unity Government (NUG) and other pro-democracy voices, including at the UNSC. To underline this, the then Minister for Asia, Amanda Milling met Dr Zaw Wai Soe, the NUG's Minister for Health and Education, in May and reiterated the UK's support for a return to democracy. The UK remains a significant donor in Myanmar and our development programme is supporting diverse civil society and pro-democracy voices, including women's rights organisations, LGBT+ groups and youth.
