The UK has one of the most open economies in the world through trade and financial channels. In particular, growth in the euro area – our largest trading partner – is weak and we have to expect that to dampen our own recovery.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Since entering office, this Government has worked consistently towards a rebalancing of the UK economy and growing our trade with all parts of the world, including key emerging markets. Since 2010, for example, UKTI has increased the number of its overseas-based staff working outside the EU from 875 to 1060, reflecting the growing priority being given to non-EU markets; and, excluding aircraft, nearly all of the exports supported by UK Export Finance in recent years have been to markets outside the EU. In line with this, the Department for International Trade’s (DIT) teams in Europe have increased their preparations for a no deal exit from the EU and have recommended that businesses enact their own no deal plans to ensure they are similarly prepared. DIT is also engaged with national and local governments, port authorities and other key stakeholders in Europe to minimise any disruption to supply chains.</p><p> </p><p>More widely, the DIT teams in Europe have been reassuring European businesses that the UK remains open for business; that we remain an advocate for free trade and open markets; and that the UK will continue to be an important trading partner for European businesses after we leave the EU. Most currently choose to appoint a customs agent to make declarations for them, but they can also use commercial software to self-serve. Recognising business concerns, HMRC has introduced a number of temporary easements to help business and to maintain the flow of trade across borders. The no deal scenario is based on an assessment of the average trade barriers that a country trading on WTO terms faces. That is why it is in the interests of both sides to maintain trading links once the UK has left the EU; to protect jobs and our economy while allowing us to honour the referendum and realise the opportunities of Brexit.</p><p>The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) publish estimates on trade in employment, including on the amount of jobs linked to exports. Their most recent data from 2011 estimates that 3.4 million jobs were linked to UK exports across the EU.
