We achieve high uptake for both life-course and seasonal vaccinations, with over 90% for pre-school diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis and among the highest in the world for flu vaccination. The NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme has been the biggest vaccine drive in the history of the National Health Service, implementing the largest volume of new vaccines in the shortest time, and repeatedly with boosters. 157.5 million COVID-19 vaccinations were delivered in England from December 2020 to the end of January 2024. However, over the last decade, performance across routine immunisation programmes has been in decline and continued variation in uptake and coverage between different communities reflects wider health inequalities.</p><p>In response to these challenges, the NHS vaccination strategy builds on lessons learnt from the pandemic and the success of our routine immunisation programmes. The JCVI considers the disease’s burden on society, vaccine safety and efficacy, and the impact and cost effectiveness of immunisation strategies, before making a recommendation as to whether a new immunisation programme should be developed. This advice is then considered by the Department and, subject to that consideration, the Department works with partners, including the National Health Service and the UK Health Security Agency, to ensure the effective implementation of this advice. This includes work to ensure vaccine uptake of any implemented programmes is high. The Government provides funding to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) through the Department of Health and Social Care and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The CEPI plays a key role in funding and coordinating the global research and development effort to develop a vaccine library.</p><p>The UK Health Security Agency’s (UKHSA) Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre (VDEC) makes a significant contribution to the development of a vaccine library through work in developing and evaluating new vaccines and vaccine technologies, some of which is funded by the CEPI.</p><p>The UKHSA is also reviewing the recommendations from the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS) report, in the context of the United Kingdom, and working across Government to strengthen our 100 Days Mission endeavours even further.</p><p>More broadly, an established clinical countermeasures programme, including vaccines, is a core component of our pandemic preparedness and response capability.
