star this property answer text <p>My Department works closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in developing the Government’s response to the shared challenges of improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Government announced an intention to end the sale of all new conventional cars and vans by 2040 as part of the ‘UK plan for tackling roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations’ (July 2017). My Department engaged closely with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department for Transport and other relevant departments to draft and agree this Plan, including at Ministerial level.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>By setting long term ambitions for 2040 and 2050, the Government has sent a clear signal for the UK’s direction of travel to provide industry and consumers with certainty on the transition to zero emission vehicles. The Government’s Road to Zero strategy, published in July, set out that by 2030 we want to see at least 50% and as many as 70% of new car sales being ultra low emission, alongside up to 40% of new vans. We expect this transition to be industry and consumer led, supported in the coming years by the measures set out in the Road to Zero strategy.</p><p> </p><p>There is significant uncertainty over some of the key drivers of the transition – including battery technology and new mobility services. The Government will be actively tracking market developments, looking at key factors such as uptake of Ultra Low Emission Vehicles, deployment of infrastructure, and consumer issues. We will review momentum towards our ambition by 2025, and will consider what interventions are needed if not enough progress is being made.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Highways England have been undertaking extensive research into potential air quality solutions for the strategic road network that could reduce levels of NO2. They have explored a wide range of ideas including the effectiveness of different traffic management options, understanding obstacles to greater use of electric vans on the network and different types of barrier design.</p><p> </p><p>Based on all their research, they have robust evidence that a 9.5 metre high barrier can help reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide behind the barrier and have developed a programme to identify potential sites around the network.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government takes a leading role in EU negotiations on new car and van CO2 regulations which are the major driver of greenhouse gas emissions reductions in cars and vans. The UK fleet is currently ahead of these targets in terms CO2 reduction and emits 22% less CO2 than in 2007. Pollutant emissions (for example particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen (NOx)) are regulated by European (‘Euro’) Emission Standards standards.  These have become increasingly stringent and delivered large reductions for most pollutants.  Government’s focus is now achieving real world reductions of NOx for diesel vehicles as new standards are introduced (Euro 6 for cars and vans, Euro VI for buses and lorries). The Government is committed to making the UK a global leader in the design, manufacture and uptake of ultra low emission vehicles which address both carbon and air quality issues. Uptake of these vehicles has increased fourfold year on year and they are approach 1% of new car sales.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Cars, vans and heavy good vehicles emit greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change.</p><p /> <p>Each year the Government publishes updated energy projections analysing and projecting future greenhouse gas emissions in the UK.</p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p>The last set of data was published in September 2014 and projects a reduction in road transport emissions over the period 2015 to 2020 from 108 Mt CO2 to 99 Mt CO2, based on current committed policy.</p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p /> <p>The UK has some of the most stretching carbon targets in the world which will see a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2025 compared to 1990 levels, on a path towards an 80% reduction by 2050.</p><p /> <p> </p><p /> <p> </p><p> </p> more like this
