Since 2015, repeat drink drivers must medically prove they are not alcohol dependent before getting their licence back, and the right to blood testing was removed for drivers who narrowly fail breathalyser tests. The study found that lowering the drink drive limit was not associated with any reduction in total road traffic accident rates or serious and fatal road traffic accident rates.</p><p> </p><p>There are no current plans to lower the drink drive limit in England and Wales. Drink driving is involved in around 5% of reported road casualties and 14% of fatalities.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is committed to tackling drivers under the influence of alcohol and all dangerous drivers and is determined that all such drivers are caught and punished. We employ a combined approach of tough penalties and rigorous enforcement along with our highly respected and effective THINK! campaigns to reinforce the social unacceptability of drink driving, and to remind people of the serious ramifications that drinking and driving can have on themselves and others.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has also taken some important steps to tighten drink driving legislation. In 1979, 26% of road deaths occurred in accidents where at least one driver/ rider was over the drink-drive limit. It has been below 15% each year since 2010. We are determined to continue to reduce this number further, through our THINK! campaign, enforcement and tough penalties.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has no immediate plans to lower the drink drive limit in England and Wales. It is worth noting that during this period, communications were influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on hospitality.
