We understand that the Special Investigation Unit has opened an investigation into the incident and we urge the Public Prosecution Office to ensure that the investigation is thorough and transparent. We are aware of the arrests of seven women on charges for disrupting the elections process, belonging to an illegal group and calling for the overthrow of the government. The first round of parliamentary elections, which took place on 22 November, went smoothly despite some violence and IED attacks. We encouraged the authorities to conduct full investigations into any of those accused of crimes and ensure that individuals are given a right of appeal against citizenship deprivation decisions. The UK provides technical assistance to Bahrain and share best practice on the criminal justice system. These programmes aim to help with implementing the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry and UN Universal Periodic Review. The British Government consistently and unreservedly condemns torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and it is a priority for us to combat it wherever and whenever it occurs. As well as raising our concerns with the Government of Bahrain, the UK continues to work with the Bahraini authorities to share best practice on torture prevention measures and address allegations of torture and mistreatment.</p><p>We commend the steps taken by the Bahraini Government to implement the recommendations set out in the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry.
