answer text
The UK is an international leader on gender equality and promoting women’s and girls’ rights. Gender equality is a top development priority and priority for the UK. We will not achieve any of the Sustainable Development Goals while gender inequality persists. Gender equality is considered in the design of all of DFID’s programmes. Our support is delivering results at scale – between 2015 and 2019, UKAid supported 5.8 million girls to gain a decent education; helped 23.5 million women and girls with modern methods of family planning; and reached 60.3 million children under 5, women of childbearing age and adolescent girls through our nutrition-related programmes.
more like this

answer text
Today a girl is about one-third less likely to be cut than 30 years ago, but UNICEF estimates that at least 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The UK leads the world in our support to the Africa-led movement to end FGM. Since 2013, our programmes have enabled 8,000 communities, representing 24 million people, to pledge to abandon FGM, and over 3 million girls to receive FGM protection and care services.

We know, however, that more needs to be done and in 2018 we announced a further £50 million UK aid package – the biggest single investment worldwide to date by any international donor – to tackle this issue across the most-affected countries in Africa.
more like this

answer text
The situation in Northeast Syria remains very fluid, and we are continually adjusting our assessment of the current impact on the humanitarian situation in the region at this stage. Prior to the recent military action, there were already 1.65 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in the region. The UN reports at least 160,000 people have been displaced since the Turkish military action began, including at least 70,000 children. Critical civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals, has also been affected by the conflict. The ongoing military action on the ground is also impacting the humanitarian response. Many NGOs have already had to withdraw staff, and some have suspended activities altogether. This is very concerning, and we are in close discussion with our NGO partners and the UN.
more like this

answer text
Tackling malnutrition is an important part of the Department for International Development’s work in Rwanda. It is delivered through nutrition-specific interventions in programmes on early childhood development and stunting. It is also integrated into broader interventions such as those on agriculture and social protection, for example through nutrition and child sensitive cash transfers and investment in fortified foods. A new research programme will generate evidence on what works to strengthen nutrition service delivery at scale. DFID’s support for nutrition in Rwanda over the last three years has reached 560,000 children under five (180,000 of whom are children under two) and 1.1 million women of reproductive age (of whom 680,000 are pregnant or lactating women).
more like this
