answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/11/2018 answer text <p>Our Female Offender Strategy is committed to improving outcomes for women at all stages of the justice system, and this includes supporting those who have children. We know that female prisoners are more likely than male prisoners to be a primary carer and imprisoned mothers are more likely to be living with their children prior to custody – around 60% of women compared with about 45% of men in prison who have children. Figures from a 2015 data matching exercise with the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Work and Pensions showed that between 24% and 31% of all female offenders were estimated to have one or more child dependents.</p><p><br>We know that when coming into contact with the criminal justice system, some women choose not to disclose that they have dependent children for a number of reasons. As such, iIt is difficult to create an accurate estimate of the number of women who choose not to disclose and to provide appropriate targeted support. However, we want all women to feel safe enough to disclose and are taking steps to encourage this, as outlined below. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that the National Probation Service’s pre-sentence reports, which assist the court in making sentencing decisions, highlight the fact an offender has dependent children and supporting the roll out of the ‘Safeguarding Children When Sentencing Mothers’ training material developed by Dr Shona Minson.</p> answering member constituency Charnwood answering member printed Edward Argar question first answered 12/11/2018 17:38:40 answering member 4362 label Biography information for Edward Argar

answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/11/2018 answer text <p>The tables show the numbers of self-harm incidents, assault incidents on prisoners, and assault incidents on staff, per 100 prisoners, for each prison from 2013 to 2017 inclusive.</p><p> </p><p>The Government takes very seriously its responsibility to keep prisoners safe, and we are committed to reducing the incidence of self-harm across the estate. This is why we have established a prison safety programme through which we are taking forward a comprehensive set of actions to improve safety in custody. We have invested in over 3,000 additional staff in order to deliver consistent, purposeful regimes. We have also introduced the new key worker role, under which staff can give prisoners more effective challenge and support.</p><p> </p><p>Our prison staff work incredibly hard and we are under no illusions about the challenges they face. We are taking urgent action to make prisons safer, and assaults on our staff will never be tolerated. That is why we are working with the Police and Crown Prosecution Service to ensure successful prosecutions of those who assault them. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/08/2018 answer text <p>The offence(s) for which each prisoner serving a sentence of less than 12 months was imprisoned, as at 31 March 2018, can be viewed in the table.</p><p> </p><p>Sentencing is a matter for our independent courts, who take into account all circumstances of the case, including any aggravating and mitigating factors.</p><p> </p><p>Whilst there is persuasive evidence that short custodial sentences of less than 12 months do not help some offenders turn their backs on crime, protecting the public will always be our top priority. The annual value of the service is estimated to be in the region of £3.2 - 3.7m according to the volume of services provided. The duration of the provision of the services is 1 July 2016 to 28 August 2018, with options to further extend the contract by three further periods of twelve months.
