answer text <p>Every death in custody is a tragedy, and the Government is committed to reducing the number of self-inflicted deaths in prison. It is very difficult to accurately calculate the financial costs of suicide in prison.</p><p> </p><p>Action to reduce the number of self-inflicted deaths is an urgent priority, and our plans, including investment in 2,500 more prison officers across the prison estate, are set out in the White Paper on Prison Safety and Reform which was published earlier this month.</p> more like this

Due to its unique role in maintaining the constitutional balance between the executive, legislature, and the judiciary, this question was not relevant to the Sentencing Council of England and Wales. answer text <p>Improving safety and decreasing violence in prisons is a key priority. Last month we launched the Prison Safety and Reform White Paper and we are already implementing measures to tackle drugs, drones and phones. This major overhaul of the prison system will include the recruitment of an extra 2,500 frontline officers. Our reforms will empower governors to make the changes they need, ensuring that prisons are places of safety and reform.</p><p>225 prisoners were removed from HMP Bedford following the disturbance on 6 November 2016. 140 cells required repair. A programme of works was immediately put in place to bring cells back into operation as soon as possible.</p> more like this
