Whilst the projects currently being funded do not necessarily have a specific objective of bringing Israelis and Palestinians together, or constitute ‘joint’ projects as such, much of the work our implementers do involve Israelis and Palestinians working together. Our Conflict Prevention programme includes a focus on supporting and strengthening constituencies for peace. They also have discussed with the Israeli authorities the release of prisoners, released as part of the Galid Shalit deal but then recently re-arrested during Operation Brother's Keeper, as part of ceasefire negotiations. We agree with the need to implement a durable ceasefire that ensures peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis. The UK has three objectives towards the crisis in Gaza - to secure a ceasefire, to alleviate humanitarian suffering and to keep alive the prospects for peace negotiations which are the only hope of breaking this cycle of violence and devastation once and for all. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Fostering co-existence is a key objective of our £4 million conflict pool, which is available in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The UK also supports projects through the EU, such as through the EU Partnership for Peace programme, which aims to build trust and understanding in the region in order to create the conditions for peace.
