answer text
We are providing £300m funding for buses until April 2025. £150m will be available from July 23 to March 24, and a further £150m from April 24 to March 25.

Almost half of the additional funding will be provided to bus operators based on the distance of the routes that they operate. This will allow us to focus funding on longer routes, such as those in rural areas, where some services are less likely to be commercially sustainable without additional funding.

In 2021, we launched a £20 million Rural Mobility Fund (RMF) to trial more demand responsive minibus services in rural and suburban areas. 16 pilots are taking place across 15 different local authorities, including one in Warwickshire. The RMF provides us with an opportunity to better understand the challenges associated with introducing bookable bus services in rural and suburban settings.

Through our Tackling Loneliness with Transport fund, we’ve supported twelve projects with over £5 million of investment targeted at those most likely to suffer from loneliness.

Findings from these pilot schemes are being evaluated and will be used to build an evidence base which will inform how future transport schemes can contribute to reducing loneliness in communities.

answer text
Hydrogen has an important potential role to play in decarbonising heavier applications such as HGVs. There are specific use cases where hydrogen can offer advantages over batteries, for example where vehicles need longer ranges and more rapid refuelling (longer distance HGVs) or greater energy density. The Zero Emission Road Freight Demonstrator programme will showcase zero emission HGV technologies, including hydrogen fuel cells, at scale, on UK roads. The programme will build a strong evidence base to enable strategic, long-term, national infrastructure decisions to be made.

The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) supports the supply of renewable hydrogen used in transport by placing obligations on suppliers to ensure a percentage of the fuel supplied in the UK is from renewable sources where it can provide valuable carbon savings. The Government has expanded this support to include not just road vehicles, but also trains and shipping. Fuels supplied under the RTFO scheme deliver a third of domestic transport carbon savings under current carbon budgets.

answer text
The Department ran a consultation between 18 January and 22 March on the proposal to defer the date of a light vehicle’s first MOT from three to four years. The results of the consultation are currently being considered by ministers and a response will be issued in due course.

The impact assessment and its annex include a full consideration of the potential decrease in road safety due to more time and mileage passing before a vehicle’s first MOT under a one-year increase to the first date. The analysis found that the level of casualties involved in collisions caused by vehicle defects could increase by 1 - 4%, but this represents a much smaller magnitude when compared to overall collisions (around 0.01 - 0.05%). The published impact assessment also outlines assumptions and limitations of the analysis.
more like this
