answer text <p>The Department for Transport is responsible for policy and compliance relating to the security of UK shipping and ports, in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. Many departments play a role in wider maritime security activity, including the monitoring of potential illegal imports by sea and other sea-based threats.</p><p> </p><p>The National Strategy for Maritime Security, published in August 2022 by the Secretaries of State for the Department for Transport, Home Department, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Ministry of Defence and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, sets out the full spectrum of responsible departments, agencies and other organisations.</p> more like this

We are working hand in hand with industry to achieve this by delivering on the recommendations of Maritime 2050. We have recently published the Maritime Recovery Route Map, setting out actions that Government and industry will take to enhance skills, achieve Net Zero, harness technology to innovate, strengthen infrastructure, and boost our competitive advantage. This, coupled with the steps set out in the recently published Future of Freight Plan, will help us and industry drive levelling up across the country, meeting the aspirations of the Coastal Powerhouse Manifesto.</p> more like this

answer text <p>We fully support the development of short sea shipping in the UK and recognise the benefits increased uptake could provide as a means of freight transportation.</p><p> </p><p>To better understand the markets for coastal shipping and inland waterways we have commissioned a study to explore the opportunities, barriers and the potential for mode shift from inland transport networks.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore, the Department’s forthcoming strategy – Maritime 2050 – recognises the role of short sea shipping and, more widely, sets out how the UK can remain a key competitive maritime nation through meeting the challenges of the future and taking advantage of the opportunities that arise, include those in freight transport.</p> more like this
